[IMID 2018] Samsung Display, The key material that will connect the smart world and the individual in the future is the display

Reporter & Analyst : Daejeong Yoon

At IMID 2018 held in BEXCO, Busan, Korea on August 29, Kwak Jin-Oh, vice president of Samsung Display, delivered a keynote speech on the theme of ‘The Infinite Evolution with Display’. He emphasized โ€œDisplay will be the key material to link to the smart world and the creation of a new world and environment will be accelerated.โ€

Comparing the evolution of living things with the evolution of displays, Kwak pointed out the direction of the next-generation displays such as โ€˜size diversity from small to large size, adaption in design inclusive of full screen and flexible, and convergence with other technologiesโ€™.

In terms of size diversity, Kwak said, “High-resolution displays that can feel realism in small and medium-sized area, and displays that can be immersed like a big screen in a movie theater in large area, are required.”

The design adaptation then was referred to design autonomy as one of the values of next-generation displays. He further emphasized the value of rollable and stretchable displays as well as foldable displays in small and medium sized displays.

Kwak said that Samsung is developing rollable displays as well as foldable displays that are currently attracting great interest. Unlike foldable display, rollable display requires consideration of the stress on the front of the panel. He commented โ€œBecause there are many things to consider such as the time when it is rolled up, and the number of times it is rolled and unrolled, the company is conducting research to solve them.โ€

He also introduced a stretchable display that can implement patterns freely, and explained that it is developing various structures using RGB pixel unit and stretchable unit to implement displays that have high reliability with low stress.

Mentioning about biotechnology at the convergence area, he pointed out that new fusion technologies need to be considered such as measurement of oxygen saturation by transmitting light to hemoglobin or changes in the wake up mode and sleep mode of the display depending on the melatonin change.

Finally, Kwak concluded that display is evolving to create a new society and environment, emphasizing that display is the key material to link between the individual and the smart world in the forthcoming 5G era.

[IMID 2018] LG Display and Samsung Display exhibited a large number of large, and small & medium sized OLED applications.

LG Display and Samsung Display introduced a number of applications using OLED at IMID 2018 held in BEXCO, Busan, drawing attention from many visitors. In particular, LG Display displayed its strategies mostly for large OLED applications such as 77-inch transparent OLED and 55-inch video wall OLED, while Samsung Display introduced the small and medium sized OLED applications mainly for automotive and virtual reality devices.

First, the panel thickness of the 77 inch transparent flexible OLED introduced by LG Display is 400 ฮผm, the bending radius is 80 mm, and the luminance is 200 nit based on full white.

LG Display explained that it would improve the required transmittance and durability. Also, it commented that the goal is to reduce bezel to 0.5 mm at its display of 4 FHD OLEDs with 3.8 mm bezel.

In addition, LG Display presented a 1200ppi 4.3-inch WRGB OLED for virtual reality devices. One official explained that WRGB OLED, which represents the resolution by etching the color filter, would be advantageous for higher resolution than RGB using the deposition method.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display exhibited a number of automotive OLEDs, including unbreakable OLED for 6.22 inch steering wheel, 1000R curved OLED for passenger monitor, transparent OLED for HUD, S-curved OLED for CIO and rollable OLED. The concerned official expects the OLED to be widely applied to inside automobiles because it has excellent design autonomy, compared to LCD.

He added โ€œAlthough there are many things to be improved, such as brightness and reliability, it is continuously improving the required performance through the feedback from European customersโ€.

Furthermore, Samsung Display showcased light field display and 2,000ppi resolution RGB OLED for virtual reality devices.

OLED display to embroider the blue sky and stars inside the plane

“OLEDs will be installed on the ceilings and walls of planes to provide customers with a variety of images. It is expected that stars will shine in the ceiling at night and clear blue skies during the day time inside the future airplane.”

Dr. Julian Chang, associate tech fellow of Boeing, presented various advantages of OLED to be applied to the inside of planes in future at the ‘2018 OLED Korea conference’ hosted by UBI Research on March 7~8.

Explaining “OLEDs are capable of full black implementation and excellent color reproduction”, Dr. Julian said that “We can provide customers with realistic blue skies and night skies.” “The planes have a lot of curved surfaces, so easy-to-implement OLEDs have advantages over other displays.”

He also emphasized the advantages of OLED which are helpful to provide information, without limit of viewing angle, to customers and crews who need a lot of information in a narrow space, reduce the blue light that interferes with sleeping, and reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide with lower power consumption than LED.
On the other hand, he commented that it is necessary to improve the maximum luminance, reduce the burn-in phenomenon, satisfy FAA regulations, and facilitate easy installation and repair in order for OLED to enter the airplane industry.
Today, OLEDs are expanding beyond mobile devices and premium TVs into automotive and wearable markets. Attention is growing whether customers are given a new experience to taste the realistic sky as OLED is applied to the interior of the plane.

The Hi-Tech Fair, which celebrates its 19th anniversary this year, is a representative event showing how much China is interested in the IT industry.
Hi-Tech Fair held in Shenzhen, China from November 16th to 19th exhibits almost all fields relevant to IT industry. Communication with Display is a key point to increase importance of IT industry and these two field is developing by complex connecting with another field.

Exhibition include total 9 hall and the newest technology such as Smart cities, robots, aviation, telecommunications, home appliances, games, and other technologies that connect with IT can be seen in that area. Among them, ย one that stick out in 1 Hall is Visionox which is large panel company in China, many people are gather together to watch China’s Display Panel technology.

Current smart phone display’s trends are a bezel-less design that maximizes the screen by minimizing the bezel and a curved design represented by the Galaxy Edge series. In this exhibition, Visionox showed a the bezel-less design smartphone which applied rigid OLED and a curved design smartphone which applied flexible OLED having 8R bending radius.

According to officials, disclosed curved display is going to apply to smartphone which will launched in market earlier in 2018. So, this process is currently making decision about supplying with china’s smartphone company. In addition, a variety of flexible displays being developed for future foldable and rollable applications have been on display.

On the other side in Hall, Royole, who manufactures and sells VR devices for China’s leading OLED applications, exhibited flexible sensors with VR device “Noon” Also, they did not exhibit their technology, they disclose a very thin flexible display of 0.01mm through wathcing a video and keep delivering message about continous Display technology development. Also, we can see the various forms and functions of display panel is applied to electrical instruments such as car, robot in many booths. Among them, OLED is expected to continue to grow in significance of IT industry in the future due to its wide range of applications and its technical strengths such as design excellence, thin panel and high resolution.

Samsung Electronics, sets a profit record of 0.97 Trillion Won in the 3rd Quarter

Samsung Electronics reported sales of KRW 62.05 trillion and operating profit of KRW 14.53 trillion through the conference call of the third quarter in 2017, and the display business recorded sales of KRW 8.28 trillion and operating profit of KRW 0.97 trillion. Display business sales increased 7.4% compared to the previous quarter and 17.3% compared to the previous year, but operating profit of 1 trillion fell with a decrease of 43.3% of the previous quarter and 4.9% the previous year. OLED sales are shown to occupy 60% of the display industry.

According to Samsung Electronics, in the 3rd quarter of 2017, main customers of OLED have increased through the launch of new flagship products focused on flexible products. However, its performance has decreased than the previous quarter due to factors such as increased costs of new OLED lines initial ramp-ups, and intensified price competition between rigid OLEDs and LCD panels.

Samsung Electronics plans to increase supply of flexible products in OLED in the 4th quarter, and expand sales of rigid OLED products to secure profitability. In the LCD industry, there are off-seasons and excess supplies resulting to supply and demand imbalance, but profitability is to be secured by strengthening yield and cost activities and expanding sales portion of high value-added products such as UHD, large-format, and QD.

In 2018, OLEDs are expected to become the mainstream in the mobile display market, with expectations that flexible panel dominance will be particularly strong in the high-end product line. Samsung Electronics said it plans to develop a system to meet the flexible demand of major smartphone manufacturers and improve earnings by securing differentiated technologies.

In 2018, the LCD market may continue to expand in China and intensify competition among companies, but trend of large-sized and high-resolution TVs are expected to continue. Samsung Electronics states it will strengthen its strategic partnership with its customers and concentrate on improving profitability by promoting sales of high value-added products such as UHD, large format, QD, and frameless products.

Samsung Electronics sold 97 million mobile phones and 6 million tablets in the 3rd quarter of 2017. Mobile phone sales in the 4th quarter are expected to decline Quarter on Quarter, but tablet sales are expected to increase QoQ. TV sales reached a record around 10 million units, and sales in the 4th quarter were expected to rise to mid-30%.

10.4 trillion was invested in facility during the 3rd quarter of Samsung Electronics, of which 2.7 trillion was invested in display. Displays are reported to have additional production lines to meet customer demands for flexible OLED panel.

CEO Chang-Hoon Lee of Samsung Display said, “In the case of small and medium-sized OLEDs, we are planning to apply it to AR, VR, foldable, and automotive industry.” Also, โ€œIn Automotives, OLEDs are focused on energy efficiency, design differentiation, and black image quality which is critical to driver safety, in preparation with client company cooperation.” Additionally, โ€œFoldable is constantly being researched and developed in line with customer demand, and is centered on enhancing the level of perfection demanded by the market and customers. We will work with our clients to prepare these for mass production desired by our customers.โ€

‘OLED display’ selected by virtual (VR) ยท Augmented Reality (AR)

By adopting OLED display in virtual and augmented reality devices, which are leading the fourth industrial revolution in recent years, users can experience more realistic and lively images with faster response time, richer color and higher contrast ratio comparing to LCD.
OLED displays for virtual and augmented reality have been widely used in all industries including games, advertising, and education, and related applications have recently been actively pursued.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the filing of OLED display for virtual and augmented reality is on an increasing trend each year, in particular, the number of related applications has greatly increased over the last 3 years.

<OLED display application trend for virtual and augmented reality, Source: Korean Intellectual Property Office>

According to the recent filing status by year, there are 240 applications in 2014, 263 in 2015, and 439 in 2016, and applications for OLED display technologies for virtual and augmented reality have increased rapidly from 2014.

The reason for the recent increase in applications for virtual and augmented reality OLED display fields is that the development of various conditions such as resolution, response time, usability, comfort, and price is required as a preliminary task for popularization of virtual and augmented reality devices and OLED displays can realize realistic images and are easy to design with flexibility, which is why they can meet these needs much better than existing LCDs.

Also, given the prospect that the virtual and augmented reality market will increase to about $ 80 billion by 2020, OLED displays suitable for virtual and augmented reality devices are being developed in various forms such as flexible, rollable, bendable, and stretchable displays, and it is expected that applications for OLED display technology for virtual and augmented reality will continue to increase accordingly.

For the filing status of OLED display technology for virtual and augmented reality (2007 ~ 2016), ย there are 774 cases (60%) of large companies, 142 cases (11%) of medium and small-sized companies, 72 cases (6%) of universities and research institutes, 70 individual cases (5%)ย  237 foreigner cases (18%).

By major application companies, 465 cases of LG Electronics, 216 cases of Samsung Electronics, 51 cases of Microsoft Corporation, 29 cases of Samsung Display, 20 cases of SK Planet, 17 cases of Qualcomm, 17 cases of LG Display, It can be seen that related technology is dominated by domestic companies.

As for the status of OLED display application field for virtual and augmented reality applications, there are 426 cases of personal entertainment (game, theme park, experience), 169 cases of defense (war simulation, weapons development, fighter pilot), 141 cases of advertisement, 131 cases of medical treatment (3D simulation, virtual endoscopy, simulation), 123 cases of healthcare, 117 movies, etc., indicating that OLED display technologies for virtual and augmented reality are most actively used in the game and defense industries.

“OLED displays, which are developed mainly for personal use products such as TVs and mobile phones, are expected to expand into new industries as well as virtual and augmented reality based on their superior image presentation capabilities,” said Kim Jong-Chan, head of the screening team in the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO). In addition, we expect to see increased applications related to technologies to address performance improvement challenges, such as extending the life of OLED displays and extending the operating temperature range. “.
In order to strengthen the patent competitiveness of OLED display field, KIPO has regularly held “IP Together” event as part of communication and cooperation between industry and patent office, and will continue to provide related information through the “Revised Patent Law Seminar”.

On the other hand, according to the ‘Display Market Report for AR and VR’ published by UBi Research, OLED for AR and VR are expected to be shipped by 2.6 million units in 2017, accounting for 52% of the market share and 52 million units in 2021 accounting for 80% of the market share.

The OLED is the best automotive display

The seminar on the trend of the up-to-date technology for the next generation display which was themed โ€˜The technology trend for latest display and the automotive displayโ€™ hosted by the UBI Research, was held on July 14th at COEX in Seoul.

In the seminar, Sun-hong, Park, a senior researcher of automotive parts, said that โ€œThe attention to the display is increasing due to the importance of the visual intelligence, and its application will also grow because the OLED is able to easily realize the flexible deign and the transparent display.โ€

In addition, he expected that โ€œThe digitalization for the automotive will be lasting, and the China will take 50% and more of the worldwide consumption market for automotive in 2020, and the application of display including OLED will increase in accordance with the attributes of the Chinese who prefer colorful design.โ€

During the briefing of a car not having a side mirror which became an issue in recent, โ€œThe application of the OLED which has rapid response speed and wide viewing angle is highly likely to be employed. If it can just overcome the reliability, the OLED will be the best display for the automotive.โ€

In the other side, according to the โ€œAutomotive Display Report โ€“ application & market trend analysis and the market forecastโ€ published by the UBI Research, it expected the OLED panel will be started in earnest applying to the cluster or CID of the automotive from 2018, and the automotive display is expected to grow about 17% annually, reaching around US$ 25,000 million by 2022. The AMOLED panel market among this will be account for about 20%.

LGD will invest KRW 1.99trillion in 6G flexible OLED line. (Source = LGD)

Hyunjoo Kang / jjoo@olednet.com
LG Display, the worldโ€™s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it will invest KRW1.99 trillion in a new 6th generation (1,500mm x 1,850mm) flexible OLED display production line in Paju, South Korea, as part of its preemptive efforts to change and lead the approaching era of flexible OLED screens for mobile devices.
Dr. Sang-Beom Han, CEO and Vice Chairman of LG Display, said โ€œA paradigm shift to OLED represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the display industry.โ€ He added, โ€œLG Display is determined to become the leader in the fast-growing OLED market through timely investments to maximize efficiency.โ€
The new production line, E6, will be installed at its P9 plant in Paju with KRW 500 billion already invested to build supporting infrastructure. The E6 line is scheduled to start mass production in the second half of 2018 and will produce 15,000 input sheets per month. In addition to this new line, LG Display already has a 4.5th generation flexible OLED display production line (E2) in Paju, and is building another new 6th generation production line (E5) in Gumi which was announced in July 2015.
LG Display announced in November 2015 that it planned to invest a total of more than KRW 10 trillion for the new P10 plant in Paju to produce mainly OLED displays including large-size OLED displays and flexible OLED displays. With the investment in P10, which is now under construction, and the expansion of the P9 facility, the company is laying a firm foundation to lead the next generation market for smartphones with its advanced OLED technology.
LG Display was the first to introduce the era of large-size OLED TVs with its worldโ€™s first 55-inch OLED TV display in January 2013. It also introduced the era of flexible OLED displays with the worldโ€™s first plastic substrate-based 6-inch OLED display for smartphones in October 2013 and the worldโ€™s first 1.3-inch circular flexible OLED display in September 2014. LG Display has established an industry reputation for its recognized expertise and knowledge of flexible OLED displays.
OLED specializing research company UBI Research expects flexible OLED shipment to greatly increase to approximately 653.1 million units in 2020 from 76.7 million units in 2016. Another display market research company IHS estimates the flexible OLED market will grow to 416 million units in 2020 from 59 million units in 2016.
According to IHS DisplaySearch, this market is expected to grow rapidly with shipments increasing from 59 million in 2016 to 416 million in 2020.

Silicone Better than Acrylic for Flexible OLEDโ€ฆMomentive Introduces InvisiSil

Momentive demonstrated InvisiSil at SID 2016 (Source = Momentive)

ย Hyunjoo Kang / jjoo@olednet.com

One of the issues of flexible OLED actualization is acrylicโ€™s vulnerability against lower temperature, and silicone is emerging as a solution. Meanwhile, Momentive is attracting attention with their promotion of silicone based InvisiSil.

One of the key encapsulation technologies for flexible OLED is TFE (thin film encapsulation) that laminates thin inorganic and organic films, used by Samsung Display. Of these, organic material is formed through inkjet OLED process using acrylic materials. However, acrylic organic materials are easily broken under 0 โ„ƒ, which leads to difficulties in producing flexible OLED using these. However, silicone based materials can withstand up to -40 โ„ƒ and are considered strong candidate for acrylic replacement.

Momentive is a company that develops such silicone based materials. In SID 2016 (22-27 May), Momentive opened an exhibition booth and presented InvisiSil Snap Cure silicones. The InvisiSil Snap Cure systems can cure rapidly at room temperature without UV exposure.

Momentive explained that for flexible AMOLED panel to move past edge type and toward true flexible such as foldable and rollable, silicone is much better suited than acrylic. Furthermore, they added that silicone based materials have yet revealed any disadvantages compared to acrylic, and that it is in development for continued application to mass production.

Hyunjoo Kang / jjoo@olednet.com

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has sold more than one million curved monitor products worldwide. The global display provider introduced its first curved LED monitor โ€“ the 27-inch, 4000R (curvature radius of 4,000 mm) SD590C model โ€“ in September 2014, and since has expanded its line-up to include several additional curved monitors. As a result, Samsung currently accounts for more than 85 percent of all global curved monitor sales (Source: International Data Corporation (IDC), 2015 Q4 worldwide sales results for 15โ€~34โ€ curved monitors).

Designed to match the natural shape of the human eye, Samsungโ€™s curved monitors feature uniform center-to-edge viewing distances to create a more comfortable and immersive viewing experience conducive to long-term use. Combined with extra-wide viewing angles and enhanced contrast ratios, these curved displays are ideal for gamers and at-home entertainment users seeking realistic, distraction-free picture quality. As a result, Samsung has capitalized on growing demand from these audiences (many of whom employ several monitors during game play or content viewing).

โ€œSince the launch of our first curved monitor in 2014, weโ€™ve seen this technology evolve to become an industry standard that gaming and entertainment viewers expect,โ€ said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. โ€œAs curved monitors continue to grow in popularity, we welcome the challenge of further advancing our displaysโ€™ design and capabilities to drive new levels of viewer engagement and comfort. We are happy to have reached one million sales for our curved monitors so far, and we look forward to delivering new curved technology innovation in the coming years.โ€

Samsungโ€™s curved monitor design refinement includes the introduction of a sharper curve with each new model while maintaining a consistently sleek and stylish presentation. In January 2015, Samsung released its second curved monitor, the 34-inch SE790C, featuring 3000R curvature. The companyโ€™s latest curved offerings โ€“ the CF591 (27-inch model) and CF390 (23.5- and 27-inch models) โ€“ further expand visual possibilities with an industry-leading 1800R composition.

2016, Korea Seizes AMOLED Marketโ€ฆ95% of Global Market

2016-2020 Global AMOLED Panel Market Shipment [1 Million] (source : UBI Research)

This year, Korea is expected to secure overwhelming leadership position within the global AMOLED panel market with 95% market share.

According to 2016 OLED Display Annual Report, recently published by UBI Research, approximately 270 million units of AMOLED panel are to be produced from Korea in 2016, approximately 95% of the global shipment.

For AMOLED panel market revenue, Korea is estimated to occupy 96% of the total market in 2016 with US$ 14,218 million. Korea is expected to maintain approximately over 70% of the market share until 2020, and lead the global market for several more years.

This is analyzed to be due to active response by Korean display companies against AMOLED application expansion by influential global smartphone companies.

Samsung Electronics is forecast to sell over 47 million units of AMOLED panel equipped Galaxy series in 2016. The projection that Apple will also apply AMOLED panel to future iPhone series for product differentiation is gaining traction.

Several companies, including LG Display and Samsung Display, are carrying out active investment for AMOLED panel mass production line from H1 2016.

Other than Korea, China is showing rapid movement within the global AMOLED market. China is estimated to produce approximately 11 million units of AMOLED panel in 2016, and occupy approximately 4% of the global shipment, marking the second place after Koreaโ€™s 95%. China is estimated to increase the market share each year and reduce the gap with Korea; in 2020, China is expected to hold 24% of global AMOLED panel shipment in 2020.

Chinaโ€™s AMOLED panel market revenue is also forecast to show significant growth with approximately US$ 500 million in 2016 to US$ 13,700 million in 2020, a 20% of the total market.

2016 OLED Display Annual Report forecasts that the global AMOLED market is to record approximately US$ 15,000 million in 2016, and grow to approximately US$ 70,000 million in 2020.

[Light+Building 2016]LG Display to Showcase Cutting-edge OLED Light Products and Solutions

Hyun Joo Kang, Editor, OLEDNET

LG Display announced today that it is showcasing its latest advanced OLED light products and solutions at Light+Building 2016, one of the leading global trade fairs for lighting and building services technology, in Frankfurt, Germany, from March 13th to 18th.

Eleven OLED light panels are being exhibited along with four solutions using the panels. LG Display is highlighting the key advantages of OLED light, including the design flexibility that makes it suitable for different applications and venues, as well as its supreme light quality which is closest to natural light, thereby making people feel comfortable and reducing eye fatigue.

The company is exhibiting four solutions using OLED light panels:

Flexible Solution Section

The flexible OLEDs can be used to create unique and creative decorative lighting fixtures. The creativity in design increases along with the length of the panels. The flexible OLED light panels are light-weight and unshatterable. There are applications using 200x50mm flexible panels and 406x50mm flexible panels. The main highlight in this section is an application using many 320x320mm flexible panels.

Transparent Connection Solution Section

The LG Display OLED light panel generates a floating light effect by attaching the panel to glass and providing power through metal mesh transparent conductive film. It can be applied to display cabinets, shelves, and furniture. Especially when it is applied to shelves at stores, the lack of heat preserves product quality while the lack of shadow makes them more visually appealing to customers. The simplicity of OLEDs opens up the possibilities of various designs and applications.

Mirror Solution Section

By embedding the OLEDs into mirrors, LG Display has created a solution that can have a variety of uses. It can be used as a mirror in upscale hospitality settings or as a unique display box in high-end retail stores. When other light sources are used in a mirror solution, they tend to make the mirror too thick whereas OLED keeps the mirror thin and also minimizes glare.

Module Solution Section

OLED light panels allow for easy installation in diverse settings. LG Display is introducing super-slim OLED light modules at the fair with a simple aluminum housing that connects multiple panels into each module, generating unique and sleek designs. The company is showcasing the module solutions in order to demonstrate how well OLED light can be applied to interior design and architecture. It is committed to develop other solutions in order to encourage more and more people to easily use OLED lights.

Samsung and LGโ€™s Shared Vision for OLED

On the first day of OLEDs World Summit (October 27-29) held in Berkeley, USA, Samsung Display and LG Display gave their talks back to back. Samsung Displayโ€™s Vice President Chang Hoon Lee and LG Displayโ€™sย Joo Soo Lim discussed their thoughts on OLED under the titles of โ€˜The Future of OLEDsโ€™ and โ€˜A Future Game Changerโ€™ respectively.

Samsung Displayโ€™s Lee, who gave his presentation first, reiterated Samsung Displayโ€™s leadership position in the mobile market and how Samsung Electronicsโ€™ recent mobile display reflects this. Comparing RGB pixel structure and their own diamond pixel structure, Lee drew comparison between human eyes and diamond pixels; due to cell distribution in eyes, humans are more sensitive to green colors and that diamond pixels reflect this by having twice as many green subpixels as blue and red ones. The diamond pixels also maximize the sub-pixel packing and increases the PPI.

Regarding the advantages of OLED display, Lee gave 2 examples using Samsung Electronicsโ€™ latest smartphone models. Utilizing the fact that selective control of each pixel is possible in AMOLED displays, Samsung provided Vision Aid to help people with color blindness. OLEDโ€™s ability to achieve total black is used in Super Dimming function where screen brightness can be reduced to 2nits to be used in the dark environment.

LG Displayโ€™s Lim revealed that an adult in the US spends 9 hours 40 minutes a day on average looking at one form of display or another. Highlighting the need and importance of quality display, Lim also discussed advantages of OLED display over LCD such as total black, 3D effects, and color gamut.

As the future OLED display, Both Lee and Lim placed slightly more emphasis on flexible (plastic) OLED than transparent or mirror display. Samsung Display discussed requirements necessary for a successful flexible display in more depth touching on the need for suitable cover window, flexible touch (sensor), flexible encapsulation, and flexible backplane. On the other hand, LG Display discussed flexible displayโ€™s design freedom and its influences on the wearable, mobile, and automotive markets. Lim also placed much importance on how flexible OLED can be used in virtual reality display market. The 2 speakers ended their talks affirming the need for new display market and innovation through OLED technology and new applications.

The presentations given by the 2 apparent leaders in the OLED display industry were remarkably similar with both speakers underlining major points of OLED in broad strokes. The need for solutions for future OLED, whether it be flexible, transparent, or mirror display, through innovation and technological advances is an absolute truth if not maybe too obvious. There also may be some comfort to be had in the shared vision within the OLED community. However, it is also a fact that numerous attendees of the conference commented on the similarities of the 2 presentations and the lack of any surprises.

[SID2015] What is the Answer for Flexible & Transparent with Excellent Image Quality?

In SID 2015 Display Week (31 May โ€“ 5 June), LG Displayโ€™s CTO In Byeong Kang gave a keynote speech. He explained that future display in everyday lives will be actively applied to home, office, street, and mobile device areas through various applications including window, ceiling, mirror, kitchen, automotive, desk, commercial, and wearables. He added that OLED will be the answer to key technology of flexible display (curved, rolling, and folding), large-area transparent, and excellent image quality.

Key issues of flexible are bending radius and reliability. Kang emphasized that in order to reduce the bending radius, thinner substrate is needed, and to improve reliability, new material, components development, and internal and external shock mechanism research is important. He mentioned that although OLED is good for transparentโ€™s transparency, light control, and reflectivity as key technology, LCD and LED display also have advantages of their own in transparent display realization. Kang concluded the presentation with the emphasis on the need of expansion into automotive, watch, architecture, and furniture companies from existing panel, material, and components companiesโ€™ ecosystem for commercialization of flexible and transparent display.

LG Display is currently mass producing plastic OLED panel for smart watch, and aiming for 80% automotive display market occupation in 2018 with approx. US$ 2,000,000,000,000 of revenue. In SID 2015, LG Display exhibited 18 inch rollable OLED panel, and 12.3 inch automotive OLED panel. Through the OLED and ecosystemโ€™s expansion, it is anticipated LG Display will lead flexible and transparent display market following OLED TV.

AMOLED Panel Market, to Reach US$ 46 Billion by 2020

2014 was the year preparing a platform to develop the OLED industry in full scale.

ย There was a prevalent doubt in the industry until 2014 concerning whether the OLED TV is able to break into the market or not. However, as LG Electronics successfully released the UHD OLED TV, the set manufactures were classified with the companies against LG and incapable of producing the OLED TV. Under this circumstance, the majority of TV set manufacturers including Samsung Electronics exhibited the Quantum dot (QD) BLU LCD TV at CES2015. The night view screen which was the exhibition concept only appeared on the OLED TV was employed on the QD LCD TV chasing the high contrast ratio just like the OLED TV.

In the display for a mobile device, the OLED succeeded in establishing an exclusive market with G Flex2 and Galaxy Note Edge with emphasis on the flexibility feature that LCD cannot even attempt to imitate.

According to the โ€˜โ€™2015 OLED Display Annual Reportโ€™โ€™ published by UBI Research on the 10th, the total revenue has decreased by 4% compared to the previous year due to the AMOLED panel shipments cut resulting from the low sales of Galaxy S5 in 2014.

Is the OLED industry already in crisis?

Though the OLED industry got wet with rain for a while in 2014, it will begin to solidify its place in 2015. Flexible OLED and TV are the alternatives.

UBI Research methodically analyzed and took a close look at the future of flexible OLED on the โ€˜โ€™2015 OLED Display Annual Reportโ€™โ€™. There are a number of display manufacturers developing products in view of that the rollable display is the final stage of a flexible display. But if the rollable display is to be applied on a mobile device, the cultural components are to go back to the analog age and in terms of technology, it may cause a heating problem as all parts excluding the display are concentrated on the body. For that reason, UBI Research prospected that the rollable product will be used on a large movable screen type display rather than on a mobile device.

150211_AMOLED Panel Market, to Reach US$ 46 Billion by 2020

Also the โ€˜โ€™2015 OLED Display Annual Reportโ€ of UBI Research forecasts that the AMOLED panel market will grow at a CAGR of 30% reaching US$ 46 billion by 2020. Assuming the OLED panel for TV and tablet PC will take the sales share of 30% respectively in 2020, the report predicted that the key application for the OLED panel market will be a TV and a tablet PC following a smart phone.

The growth of AMOLED panel market is anticipated to accelerated after 2017 given that Chinese manufactures are also likely to invest in full scale between 2016 and 2017 to previse the Koreaโ€™s monopoly of AMOLED market.

Samsung Display, 2015 to be the year of flexible OLED!

The A3 line of Samsung Display is moving silently. Reigning as the best in the mobile AMOLED industry, Samsung Display has been preparing the flexible AMOLED as its next prey for a long time.

Samsung Display provided the flexible AMOLED for Galaxy Note Edge following Gear Fit and Galaxy Round, and the next model to be released from the second quarter of this year is the dual-edge curved panel.

The target is Galaxy S6.

To continue the success of Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung Electronics is to take the flexible AMOLED in full scale on its flagship Galaxy S series. This model is expected to be unveiled at MWC2015 and it will hit the shelves from April in two models as equipped with the existing rigid AMOLED and flexible AMOLED.

Considering the capacities and yielding rates of Samsung Displayโ€™s A2 and A3, it is estimated that about 3~4 million of the 5-inch flexible AMOLED will be produced.

LG Display successfully developed worldโ€™s first flexible and also transparent OLED.

LG Display succeeded in developing worldโ€™s first flexible and transparent OLED.
LG Display announced the technological development of worldโ€™s first 18-inch flexible OLED and transparent OLED of same size, disclosing at the โ€˜national project workshop for transparent flexible display developmentโ€™ to be held from July 10 till July 11.
It is considered that LG Display secured the foundation technology for developing a large screen transparent flexible display through the simultaneous development of flexible and transparent OLED this time.
The flexible OLED that LG Display developed is 18-inch in size with HD resolution (1200 X 810) nearly 1 mega pixel quality, and this is the largest OLED in the world, realizing the radius of curvature of 30R. This means it can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm with no operational complications and implies that it is possible to implement a large panel rollable TV over 50 inches in the future.
In order to realize maximum radius of curvature even on 18-inch screen, LG Display used Polymide film of polymer materials on a substrate that TFT and organic matters are deposited, reducing the thickness and increasing flexibility drastically.
Furthermore, this concurrently developed transparent OLED is of same size and resolution as flexible OLED and the transparency is 30% or higher realized by self-developed transparent pixel design technology. It is a radical increase of transparency, given that transparency of existing LCD based transparent display is about 10% or so.
LG Display maximized the degree of completion by lowering the haze caused by circuit element and film down to 2%.
The transparent flexible display is a national project of the future industry-leading technology development program promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, and LG Display is the leading participants of total 36 organizations of industries, academies, and institutes, aiming to develop a large 60-inch transparent and flexible display by 2017.
According to In-Byung Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of the R&D Center at LG Display, โ€œPioneered OLED TV market, LG Display is leading future applied technology of OLED,โ€ and โ€œThough there still are many challenges to be resolved, we are confident in developing transparent flexible display of over the 60-inch screen UHD (Ultra High Definition) screen with transparency of 40% and a curvature radius of 100R by 2017.โ€
