Small OLED performance and forecast in the first quarter of 2021

UBI Research has published a market track on the market performance of small OLED under 10 inches. The main application products are foldable phones, smartphones, and watches.

According to UBI Research’s small OLED market track, OLED shipments for smartphones (including foldable phones) in the first quarter were 140 million units, a decrease of 13.5% compared to the previous quarter (QoQ), but increase of 32.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year (YoY).


In the first quarter of 2020, OLED shipments also decreased due to a decrease in smartphone sales due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The reason for the 13.5% decrease compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 is that shipments surged in the fourth quarter of last year due to iPhone launches and strong sales.

In terms of sales by company, Samsung Display and LG Display account for 79.0% and 11.3%, respectively, and Korean OLED dominate the market with 90.3%.

Medium and large-sized OLED performance and forecast in the first quarter of 2021

UBI Research has published a market track on the market performance of 10-inch and larger OLEDs. Applications include TVs, monitors, notebooks, and tablet PCs.

According to UBI Research’s medium and large OLED market track, the total sales in the first quarter was $1.46 billion, an increase of 16.9% compared to the previous quarter (QoQ) and 156.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year (YoY).


The reason for the sales increase in the first quarter is due to the increase in sales of large OLED panels for TVs and OLEDs for notebooks. TV OLED panels sold 1.6 million units in the first quarter, achieving the best performance ever. Notebooks OLED shipments are also increasing rapidly from this year. Notebook.s have a lot of icons and are the most concerned about image sticking, which is considered the biggest drawback of OLED. However, Samsung Display has been promoting since 2020 by developing OLED for notebooks that completely overcomes the shortcomings of OLED as a manufacturing technology accumulated from smartphones. Although OLED sales for notebooks in 2020 were only 800,000 units, shipments of 1.1 million units were achieved in the first quarter of 2021. Samsung Display is gradually expanding its business area to IT products following smartphones.

 

Inspection and measuring equipment market for OLED mobile device is expected to reach US$6.63 billion from 2017 to 2021

As the panel problem of mobile devices has become a hassle for consumers, each panel maker is strengthening the relevant inspection and measurement activities.

 

Inspection and measurement can contribute not only to enhance the quality and performance of products but also to enhance the brand image through customer satisfaction. In addition, it is expected that productivity and yield can be improved by stabilizing the process since it is possible to check the normal state of products at each process in real time.

 

According to the ‘2017 Inspection and Measuring Equipment Report for OLED Mobile Device’ published by UBI Research, the inspection & measuring equipment market will reach a total of US$ 6.63 billion (about Korean Won 7.3 trillion) in the entire OLED equipment market from 2017 to 2021. In 2018, the investment for OLED inspection & measuring equipment is expected to be about US$ 1.45 billion (about KRW 1.6 trillion), with projected investment of US$ 1.6 billion (about KRW 1.8 trillion).

 

Choong Hoon Yi president of UBi Research announced that Samsung Display is currently in process of investment in A5 Gen6 flexible OLED line. LG Display is also reported to make a large-scale investment to raise OLED sales portion and Chinese OLED panel makers such as BOE and CSOT are making an active investment in OLED line. Hence, expectantly there will be constant market demand for inspection and measuring equipment.

 

In the report, the inspection and measuring equipment market from 2017 to 2021 is classified from various viewpoints. According to this report, the equipment used for substrate and TFT process will account for the biggest market share of 50.6% of the total inspection and measuring equipment market from 2017 to 2021. Market share of cell inspection equipment is projected as 29.7%, OLED pixel as 12.7%, and encapsulation as 7%, respectively.  In the equipment market classified by test items, the equipment used for pattern inspection will account for 33.1% of the total market. Market share of repair equipment is projected as 21.3%, and light on/off inspection equipment as 16.4%, respectively.

 

Lastly, AOI equipment and laser repair equipment, the important piece of inspection and measuring equipment, are expected to reach US$ 2.33 billion and US$ 1.41 billion, respectively, from 2017 to 2021.

Mobile 기기의 panel 문제로 인해 소비자들의 불편이 가중되면서, 최근 각 panel 업체들은 검사 · 측정을 강화하고 있다.

 

검사 · 측정은 제품의 품질과 성능 향상뿐만 아니라 고객 만족을 통한 브랜드 이미지 제고에 기여할 수 있다. 또한, 각 공정에서 제품의 정상 유무를 실시간으로 점검할 수 있어 공정 안정화를 통한 생산성, 수율 향상이 가능할 것으로 예상된다.

 

유비산업리서치가 발간한 ‘2017 Inspection and Measuring Equipment Report for OLED Mobile Device’에 따르면, OLED 전체 장비 시장 중 검사 · 측정장비 시장은 2017년부터 2021년까지 총 66.3억 달러(약 7.3조원) 규모가 될 것으로 전망하고 있다. 2018년에는 14.5억 달러(약 1.6조원)의 OLED 검사 · 측정장비 투자가 진행 될 것으로 예상하고 있으며, 2019년에는 16억 달러(약 1.8조원)의 가장 많은 투자가 진행 될 것으로 전망하고 있다.

 

이충훈 대표이사는 Samsung Display는 A5 Gen6 flexible OLED line 투자를 진행중이며 LG Display는 OLED 매출 비중을 끌어올리기 위한 대규모 투자 내용 발표, BOE와 CSOT 등 중국의 OLED panel 업체들도 OLED 라인 투자를 적극적으로 진행하고 있기에 검사 · 측정장비는 지속적으로 수요가 있을 것으로 예상하고 있다.

 

본 보고서에서는 2017년부터 2021년까지의 검사 · 측정장비 시장을 다양한 관점에서 분류하여 전망하였다. 본 보고서에 따르면, 기판과 TFT에 사용되는 장비는 2017년부터 2021년까지 50.6%로 가장 큰 시장 점유율을 보이고 Cell은 29.7%, OLED 화소는 12.7%, encapsulation은 7% 순으로 전망하였다. 검사 · 측정 항목으로 분류한 장비 시장은 패턴검사가 33.1%, repair 21.3%, 점등 16.4% 순으로 나타났다.

 

마지막으로 검사 · 측정장비의 핵심 장비인 AOI 장비와 laser repair 장비는 2017년부터 2021년까지 각각 23.3억 달러와 14.1억 달러의 시장을 형성할 것으로 전망하고 있다.

The Opening of OLED TV Market, Starts Now

On November 25, LG Electronics and LG Display announced that they are planning to reveal OLED sculptures in various shapes such as tunnel, waves, cylinder, and others using 250 units of 55inch OLED panels at N Seoul Tower in South Korea. The sculptures will screen diverse contents with artistic merit and provide extraordinary spectacle while advertising OLED’s astonishing picture quality.

 

This N Seoul Tower OLED sculpture installation is the second OLED signage that LG Electronics revealed to the public; on November 19, LG Electronics installed ‘OLED Moment’, a supersize OLED signage, in 2 locations in Incheon International Airport and held a completion ceremony.

 

LG Electronics is aiming to lead the OLED TV market through 2 track strategy of OLED TV price reduction and OLED promotion. At the Q2 performance announcement, they revealed their plan for aggressive marketing through OLED promotion. The successive OLED sculpture installation can be seen as a part of LG Electronics’ OLED promotion strategy.

 

This strategy is analyzed to be fairly effective. On November 3, LG electronics revealed that the October sales figure was 4,500 units which is more than twice the amount sold in the beginning of the year. At the same time, OLED TV is continually falling down. 55inch UHD OLED TV, which was priced around US$ 3,000 on amazon.com in September, fell to the current around US$ 2,000.

 

Japan’s Panasonic revealed their plan to actively sell UHD OLED TV from 2016. China’s companies including Skyworth, Changhong, Hisense, and Konka are intending to present or release OLED TV.

 

With LG’s aggressive OLED TV marketing and the increase of OLED TV selling companies, the industry’s attention is on the future OLED TV market’s growth. According to UBI Research, OLED TV market is estimated to grow and record approximately 17 million units in 2020.

OLED TV시장 개화, 이제부터다

LG전자와 LG디스플레이는 25일 남산 서울타워에 55인치 OLED 패널 250장을 사용한 터널형, 물결형, 원통형 등의 조형물을 공개하겠다고 발표하며 예술성을 갖춘 다양한 컨텐츠를 상영하며 OLED의 압도적인 화질을 알리는 동시에 이색적인 볼거리를 제공할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

이번 남산 서울 타워 OLED 조형물 설치는 LG전자가 일반인에게 공개한 두 번째 OLED 사이니지로 지난 19일 LG전자는 인천공항 두 곳에 각각 초대형 OLED 사이니지인 ‘OLED Moment’를 설치하고 19일 준공식을 열었었다.

LG전자는 OLED TV 가격 하락과 OLED 알리기라는 2가지의 전략으로 OLED TV 시장 선도라는 목표를 이루려고 하고 있다. 특히 지난 2분기 실적발표회에서 OLED 알리기를 전면에 내세우는 전략을 통해 공격적인 마케팅을 펼치겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 잇따른 OLED 조형물 설치는 LG전자의 OLED 알리기 전략의 일환으로 볼 수 있다.

이런 전략은 현재 어느 정도 효과를 거두고 있는 것으로 분석된다. 지난 3일 LG전자에서 10월 판매량이 연초 대비 2배 이상 늘어난 4,500대를 돌파했다고 밝혔다. 동시에 OLED TV에 대한 가격하락도 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 아마존 기준 55inch UHD OLED TV는 9월 US$3,000의 가격대에서 현재 US$2,000의 가격대로 하락한 상태이다.

일본의 Panasonic은 UHD OLED TV를 2016년부터 본격적으로 일본에 판매할 계획을 밝혔으며, 중국의 Skyworth와 Changhong, Hisense, Konka 등도 OLED TV를 내놓거나 출시할 예정이다.

이와 같이 LG의 공격적인 OLED TV 마케팅과 LG 전자 이외의 OLED TV 판매업체가 늘어나고 있어 앞으로의 OLED TV 시장의 성장세에 업계의 관심이 쏠리고 있다.

한편 유비산업리서치에 따르면 OLED TV 시장은 2020년에 약 1,700만대의 규모로 성장할 것이라 밝혔다.
