How far has QNED completed?

The reality of QNED (quantum dot nano-rod LED), which Samsung Display is preparing as a next-generation display, has become clear.

As a result of analyzing 160 patents applied by Samsung Display, it was confirmed that the structure constituting the QNED has already been completed, and that the only remaining task is to keep the number of nano-rod LEDs arranged in the light-emitting pixel constant.

As a result of classifying the contents of each patent according to the purpose of the application, a total of 39 types were found, with 49 cases related to device arrangement being the most. The following is 20 cases to improve the light efficiency.

The number of aligned nano-rod LEDs per pixel, which determines the yield and image quality characteristics of QNED, is determined by the distribution of LEDs in the ink, the number of LEDs injected into the pixel, and the alignment ratio of the injected LEDs.

If the distribution of the number of nano-rod LEDs per pixel is different, there is a change in the voltage applied to each pixel, resulting in a defect.

It has been confirmed that Samsung Display has already developed a method for making the number of nano-rod LEDs per pixel constant and an algorithm that can make the luminance uniform even when the number of nano-rod LEDs is different.

In the โ€œQNED Technology Completeness Analysisโ€ published this time, it was written as the contents of the previous report published through analysis of 94 patents and 66 newly added patents. It was analyzed and recorded.

In this report, QNED patent numbers, classification tables, and quantitative analysis data that have not been disclosed before are provided in Excel.

[iMiD 2017] OLEDON, Disclose plane source FMM deposition principle for 2250ppi OLED manufacturing

Prof. Hwang Chang-Hoon, CEO of OLEDON, a venture laboratory of Dankook University, presented a plane source FMM deposition technology capable of implementing 2250 ppi at iMiD 2017 held on the 28th.

According to Prof. Hwang Chang-Hoon’s presentation, the plane source deposition technology developed by OLEDON differs from the existing organic material deposition method. The plane source FMM deposition technique is that the organic material is first deposited on the metal surface to form a donor film and then re-evaporate it to form an organic thin film on the substrate. Applying this technique, organic matter forms a vertical gas beam due to plane evaporation. (Source patent: 1012061620000 Republic of Korea)

The shadow distance when organics are deposited with a plane source developed by OLEDON is 0.38 ฮผm – 0.59 ฮผm. This is a level at which a 2250ppi device having a pattern size of 4 um can be manufactured.

Prof. Hwang Chang-Hoon explained โ€˜applying the plane source deposition technique reduces the incidence angle of the organic material and dramatically reduces the shadow caused by the maskโ€™. In addition, ‘using a plane source, the perpendicular organic gas beam can form a completely zero incident angle, so theoretically, the shadow distance can be zero um’.

<Principle of plane source deposition technology developed by OLEDON>

In addition, Prof. Hwang Chang-Hoon emphasized that ‘plane source deposition technology is essential for high-resolution shadow masks’.

For linear source FMMs currently in production, the shadow mask opening distance is 80 ฮผm. As a result, the incidence angle of the organic material gas is inevitably large, making it difficult to produce a shadow mask having a high density pattern.

Prof. Hwang Chang-Hoon explained, ‘Using plane source deposition technology, shadow mask taping angle is 80 ยฐ levelโ€™, and the distance between openings can be reduced to less than 20 ฮผm so that plane source deposition techniques can solve the mask pattern density problems of linear sources’.

OLEDON is challenging fully shadow-free patterning conditions with plane source deposition technology, and plan to develop and install a plane source FMM evaporator capable of manufacturing 11K class micro OLED devices in cooperation with Prof. Jin Byung-Doo in Dankook University. The opening density change of the shadow mask when the plane source FMM deposition technique is used

Meanwhile, OLEDON has 13 registered patents for plane source FMM deposition for mass production. Based on recent research results, they filed 7 new patents for mass production equipment in Korea and 3 applications are filed for PCT international application.

UDC Acquires BASFโ€™s OLED IP Portfolio for USD 96 Millionโ€ฆKing of Materials Patents

Source = UDC

Hyunjoo Kang / jjoo@olednet.com

On 28 June, Universal Display (UDC), dominating the patents within the OLED materials sector, announced that they acquired OLED related patents for approximately USD 96 million.

Most of the portfolio represent patents regarding phosphorescent OLED materials, including over 500 issues and pending patents around the world in 86 patent families. BASFโ€™s OLED portfolioโ€™s average lifetime is 10 years.

UDC is anticipating that this move, that allows them to have over 4,000 issued and pending patents, will help them develop blue emissive systems. As UDC has USD 395.7 million in cash, it should not be a problem financing this IP acquisition cost.

Korean OLED emitting materials companies are also focusing on this move; as the patent competitiveness could be said to sway OLED materials market, IP acquisition is important.

According to UBI Research, with this patent competitiveness UDC led the global OLED emitting materials market in 2015 for two consecutive years. Korean materials companies, including Duksan Neolux, are actively participating in improving their patent competitiveness to respond to UDCโ€™s solid domination of the market.

In April, Professor Jun Yeob Lee (Chemical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University) explained at a forum that UDCโ€™s patents slightly diminished through litigation, the company still has wide claim that includes almost all of phosphorescent materials sector. He emphasized that UDC began to react through acquiring other patents, and that Korean companies should also search for other methods of response.

In 2015, BASF stopped OLED related research development.

Source = Apple registered patent OLED equipped device

Hyunjoo Kang / Reporter / jjoo@olednet.com

Is Apple eyeing the OLED e-book sector as well?

On 3 May, BidnessEtc reported that the United States Patent & Trademark Office granted a new patent to Apple regarding OLED equipped newsreader device.

Itโ€™s patent`s document shows that this rollable device has AMOLED panel on both sides, and as it is flexible it is easily portable. The device can be used for newspaper, magazine contests and advertisement, and can receive messages through wireless networks.

BidnessEtc reports that this shows there is a lack of suitable displays for newspapers and magazine contents.

Meanwhile,ย this companyย registered 56 patents in March including regarding AMOLED operation improving device and methods. Much attention is focused as Appleโ€™s release of OLED equipped iPhone is almost confirmed. Appleโ€™s continued moves with patents regarding OLED are expected to create more bustle for the OLED industry.
