Following LCD panels, there are predictions that oversupply can become a reality for OLED panels.

Concerns are growing as South Korean companies plan to grow OLEDs into new “cash cow” instead of LCDs that China has taken the lead.

According to a recent report released by Hana Financial Management Research Institute on 21th, the number of OLED panel factories currently under construction in China is 419,000 sheets per month, about twice the amount of 225,000 sheets per month, which is the size of South Korea’s expansion.

According to the report, China’s BOE, which ranks first in LCD panel market, is going to increase its size to 144,000 panels. In addition, Chinese panel manufacturers such as CSOT, Visionox, and TCL are also scrambling to expand their facilities on a large scale.

Among South Korean companies, LG Display is set to operate its 90,000-unit monthly plant in Guangzhou, China, and it is expected that there will be a total of 45,000 panels per month in Paju.

Industries predict that size of OLED plant that will be built by Samsung Display in Tangjeong, South Chungcheong Province, will reach 90,000 sheets per month.

“As speed of expansion of OLEDs in South Korea and China is much faster than rate of increase in demands, there is a high possibility that oversupply will worsen.” said Joo-wan Lee, a researcher.

▶ The screen shield that caused controversy over faulty Galaxy folds…Why do I need it? (Yonhap news)

(Full text of articles: https://www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR20190421010700017?input=1195m)

Samsung Electronics’ first foldable Smartphone was embroiled in controversy over its screen defects even before it was released. Samsung Electronics explains that this happened because early users removed “screen protection film,” which can be misunderstood as screen protection film.

<Samsung Electronics [Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.]>

According to industries on the 21st, current Smartphones are going to protect displays by attaching cover windows with reinforced glass material on top of OLED display panels.

OLED panels themselves are very thin like vinyl and are weak against external shocks. Plastic OLED (Plastic OLED) that is used for foldable Smartphones is more vulnerable to scratch. However, it can’t put glass, which is a material that doesn’t fold, so it is finished by applying film of plastic material.

“Although screen protection films that we already know are additional products that prevent scratching, protective films that are used for flexible displays are very important for displays.” said Professor Hak-seon Kim of UNIST, who is a former vice president of Samsung Display. Ok-hyun Jeong, an electronic engineering professor at Sogang University, also said, “The fact that we took out a protective film from PLED is tantamount to ripping off the display parts themselves.”

OLEDs emit light as organic materials, and due to their characteristics, they are very susceptible to oxygen and moisture components. When a thin panel itself is subjected to strong pressure during a screen’s opening, it can cause the screen itself to become indigestion due to moisture in an empty space.

Plastic has a weaker hardness than glass, making it easier to scratch the surface.

In addition to screen glitches, the media that received Galaxy Folders for review such as Bloomberg and Derverge points out that the protective film is easily dented or scratched. One reviewer said, “I tapped the screen with my fingernails, but there are still permanent marks.”

Some point out that there is a gap between the protective film and the display, which makes it easier for dust and others to get rid of it. One reviewer suggested a photo showing the gap between the screen’s protective screen and bezel, suggesting that it could be misleading.

Due to this reason, Samsung Electronics explained that its screen shield is for ‘replacement’. Since there is a higher chance of damage such as scratch than conventional glass, they were made so that they could be replaced at that time. However, users should not replace them directly and go through a service center.

Experts point out that such precautions should be sufficiently notified to consumers before the launch, and that early users also need to follow basic precautions as they use first-generation products.

Jeong said, “Samsung Electronics seems to have lacked notice of screen protection. “We need to strengthen advance notice when it is officially released.” said a person who dropped it from the company, which is about 100 grams more than normal Smartphones, risks further damage when it is dropped from the same location. This part also requires the user to pay attention,” he pointed out.

“Since the film itself is a plastic material, even if it is attached with protective film, it can be pierced and torn if exposed to sharp needles, unlike glass,” Professor Kim said. “In fact, these precautions should be properly introduced when selling it.”

▶ SK is investing in OLED business? (etoday)

(Full text of articles: http://www.etoday.co.kr/news/section/newsview.php?idxno=1747027)

SK Corp. is considering investing into OLED material business. As OLED markets are rapidly growing, industries that are made of OLED materials are also increasing.

According to mid- and long-term management plan data that SK Corp. held a corporate briefing for analysts of securities companies on Wednesday, SK Corp. is also reportedly considering investing in OLED materials to expand its material business.

SK Corp. has set a mid- and long-term strategy for its material business to expand its high-growth area by utilizing its current material platform.

For OLED materials, LG Display is planning to develop its own technologies by linking current SK Trichem’s technologies such as precursors and others while also considering investing in them.

Industries predict that SK Corp. will be able to expand its business through investments as it is an investment-type holding company.

For battery materials, which are planning to enter markets with high-entry barrier materials through partner companies’ cooperation and investment in technology holding companies, it has quickly entered the market by investing 270 billion won into shares of related companies.

SK Corp. previously acquired the stake in Watson, China’s No. 1 company that manufactures the second-order essential part of the battery, in November last year.

A reason why SK is showing interest in OLED markets is because OLED markets are growing rapidly.

According to a market research company called Ubi Research, size of OLED display market was estimated to be $28.31 billion (31.9568 trillion KRW) last year, which is a 7.1% increase year-on-year and is expected to grow to $32.3 billion (36.457 trillion KRW) this year.

It is expected to grow to $59.5 billion by 2023.

As a result, many other companies are working on OLED materials. Earlier this month, LG Chem stepped up its related business by acquiring material technology for “Solid Organic Light Emitting Diodes,” a key platform for next-generation displays, from DuPont in the U.S.

Doosan also established a new company through division of its business sector to strengthen its material businesses such as OLED.

“We have no specific plan to invest in OLED materials yet.” said a representative for SK Corp.

■ Develop commercial and automotive products, new technologies / new markets and develop into first-class business

LG Display is one of the world’s largest electronics exhibitors, and will hold a press conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) in Las Vegas on June 7, the day before the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with Han vice chairman, executive vice president Kang In-Byoung, Strategy and Marketing Group Director Song Young-kwon, and other executives.

At the meeting, Han Sang-bum said, “Although there were many difficulties due to excessive supply and enormous investment due to intensified global competition last year, large-sized OLED business turned to surplus and stable profit was generated mainly in high value-added products. “This year, LG Display will focus on OLED investments, accelerating OLED growth, and focus on commercial and automotive businesses. By 2020, LGD will account for more than 50% of total OLED and growth businesses. “He said.

To this end, LG Display plans to expand its large-size OLED market, strengthen its fundamental business capabilities in small- and mid-sized P-OLED (plastic OLED) businesses, and develop new markets with differentiated commercial and automotive products.

■ Large OLED, differentiated products and supply expansion

Since LG Display first supplied OLED TV panels in 2013, LG Display has continued to develop its technology. And last year, it sold nearly 3 million units and developed into a strong player in the premium TV market. This year, the company plans to expand its TV product lineup from the existing 4K resolution to 8K, and to further enhance its competitiveness by further enhancing performance such as luminance and response time. In addition, the company will expand its market by expanding differentiated products such as wall paper, CSO (Crystal Sound OLED), rollable and transparent display. LG Display will complete the G8.5 OLED panel factory in Guangzhou, China in the first half of this year, and mass-produce OLED from the third quarter. Through this, the company plans to expand its sales volume from 2.9 million units in 2018 to 4 million units this year, and to achieve more than 10 million units in 2021.

In addition, LGD will expand sales areas for existing customers, strengthen collaboration with strategic customers, and increase sales of premium products such as ultra-large size panel.

■ Small and mid-sized P-OLED, strengthening fundamental business capacity and preparing future products.

LG Display is targeting the small- and mid-sized OLED market through P-OLED.

This year, it is a great challenge to develop core technologies and products for strategic customers in a timely to raise market share of small- and medium-sized panel.

In addition, LGD plans to increase the production capacity of the Gen 6 Gumi factory, which has a capacity of 15,000 sheets per month, and to expand the P-OLED production capacity by early stabilizing the Gen 6 factory in Paju.

In addition, LGD plans to steadily prepare related technologies and infrastructure so that future products such as Foldable can be released on time.

■ Commercial and automotive displays, Fostering first-class business

LG Display nurtures the rapidly growing commercial and automotive businesses to first-class business.

In the commercial market, LGD plans to pursue differentiated products such as 98 and 86 inches, ultra-slim products such as in-touch, bezel of 0.44 mm, transparent and gaming.

For automobiles, LTPS-based high-resolution LCDs and P-OLEDs are expected to focus on 8-inch and larger screens and high-resolution products. In addition, LGD will prepare its production infrastructure to expand its business in a timely manner and further strengthen its cost competitiveness, thereby achieving the first place in the fast growing auto market.

This year LGD plans to complete investment in preparation for the future, which began in 2017. LGD Han Sang-Bum, vice chairman of LG Display, said, “LG Display will be able to lead the global display market once again with OLED.

LG Display “expects OLED TV sales portion to account for mid 20% of total sales this year, and is to review switching LCD fab to OLED if necessary.”

Kim Sang-Don, LG Display’s CFO, said in a conference call on the 25th, “It has been successful with regard to customer demand forecast and high-end positioning for large area OLED panels.” “OLED TVs accounted for around 15% of LG Display’s sales last year and that number is expected to grow to the mid-20% range this year.” he commented. “In 2018, the production for large area OLED panels will be in the range of 2.5 ~2.8 million units, which makes it difficult to meet all the demand due to the limited capacity. Therefore, LG Display plans to aggressively respond to the market demand by expanding productivity by reducing tact time, mass-producing large area OLED panels in its Chinese fab in 2019, and converting its domestic LCD fabs to OLED fabs, if necessary.” he said.

Also he added “It now has 15 big customers for its OLED TV panels, drawing more manufacturers from China, as well as key buyers Sony and LG Electronics, LG Display will strive to achieve good results in terms of profitability next year”.

Regarding small and medium-sized POLED, CFO Kim said, “As the investment cost is high with the high market volatility, we are considering very conservatively investment. We will make conservative decisions based on the best possible assessment of potential risks.” But he said, the company is constantly working in response to the expectations that POLED will become a design form factor not only for smart phones but also for automobiles and foldable. He further commented that the response and collaboration from its primary customers are favorable particularly for the automotive POLED, the investment stance is to be maintained; however, its speed and scale will be adjusted by monitoring its adaptability and market demand. In addition, for the question of the technical problem of small and medium-sized POLED which is known through recent media, he replied that it might not be filtered with lack of fact checking and it is not based on fact.

On the other hand, LG Display’s revenue fell 19.6 percent to KRW 5,673 billion in the first quarter of 2018 from KRW 7,062 billion in the first quarter of 2017 and decreased by 20% from KRW 7,126 billion in the fourth quarter of 2017. The company also had an operating loss of KRW 98 billion in the first three months this year, compared with the operating profit of KRW 1,027 billion in the first quarter of 2017. The net loss in the first quarter of 2018 was KRW 49 billion, compared with the net income of KRW 679 billion in the first quarter of 2017.

Saying “The loss was due to the weak demand for panels with the decline in LCD panel prices and an unfavorable exchange rate”, CFO Kim Sang-Don commented “ In order to secure future competitiveness, LG Display will reduce LCD investment and shift to OLED business to secure long-term profit. Given the company’s strategy of shifting to an OLED-focused business structure, it will continue to focus on differentiated products.”

LG Display “올해 OLED TV 매출 비중 20% 중반 예상, 필요하다면 LCD fab을 OLED로 전환 검토”

LG Display, Expects 40% of OLED out of total sales in 2020.

LG Display spoke that they plan to change the sales structure by focusing on the OLED sales at the conference call in Q2, 2017 which was held on 26 July, and they expected that the OLED sales portion among the total sales would be from 10% in this year to 40% in 2020.

Sang-don, Kim, the CFO of LG Display said that they will invest about 15 trillion won of production line for the Gen10.5 OLED and the Gen6 POLED(Plastic OLED) at Paju P10 factory against 4 years. He said that “The investment of Paju P10 is a leading task for the mass production and the improvement of efficiency because the demand of OLED TV is rapidly increasing by the forecasting of 2.5 million units in 2018 and 6 million units in 2020. We will take the P10 factory as an OLED hub.”

The CFO also said that “We plan to order and install the necessary equipment from July 2017 to January 2019 for the Gen10.5 OLED line in Paju P10 factory, and through test period for 6~12 months, the 1st target will be to mass-produce the OLED of 30,000 units per month based on single unit. 5 trillion won will be invested to the P10 factory to install new lines of the Gen6 POLED with 30,000 units per month and it would be started to produce it in 2019.”

Accordingly, LG Display announced that E5 in Gumi, which was previously invested, plans to mass-produce the Gen6 POLED with monthly 15,000 units of scale in this year, E6 in Paju plans to mass-produce the Gen6 POLED with monthly 15,000 units of scale in Q2 2018. In addition, they mentioned that at the OLED new line in Guangzhou, China, will mass-produce the Gen8.5 OLED with monthly 60,000 units of scale from the first half of 2019 by the investment of the 5 trillion won. For concerns on the technology leakages about the investment of the Gen8.5 OLED in Guangzhou, the CFO, Sang-don, Kim, said “There was no cases of technology leakages in the LCD line of Guangzhou until now from last 2013 since the OLED is complicated technology to copy, and there would be much benefit by the localized equipment and all investment instead of it.”

Meanwhile, the sales of LG Display for the Q2 this year were reduced QOQ 6% (7,620 billion won) as 6,629 billion won, but, increased 13% versus same quarter of last year (5,855 billion won). The portions by the products are following: 46% for TV panels (QOQ +3%p), 22% for Mobile panels (QOQ -4%p), 17% for Monitor panels (QOQ +2%p), 15% for Laptop/Tablet panels (QOQ -1%p). LG Display explained that the performance in first half declined due to the seasonality impact, but the shipments in second half considered as high-season, will be increased versus first half.

LG Display, 70% of facility investment focused on large-sized OLED and POLED in this year

LG Display announced that it will concentrate 70% of CAPEX(investment cost for future profits) on large-sized OLED and POLED, and among them, the proportion of POLED will be higher than that of large OLED through the 2017 Q1 conference call held on April 26.

Kim, Sang Don, CFO of LG Display said “The specific size and timing of the investment is under review, but investing more than 70% of the investment in OLED remains unchanged.” Also revealed LG Display’s future investment direction by adding “Since OLED investment costs are high, we will deeply examine the confidence of our customers and the certainty of market demand, and will invest in a conservative position.”

LG Display said it will continue to secure LTPS-LCD competitiveness. Kim, Sang Don, CFO said ”We plan to switch the Gumi E5 line to POLED instead of LTPS-LCD in the second half of this year, but we think there still is demand for LTPS-LCD and opportunity for high-resolution smartphone manufacturing.”

For the LG Display’s plan for OLED Lighting business and OLED panel shipment, mentioned “OLED lighting will be produced about 15,000 sheets in the second half of 2017, and POLED will be mass-produced in Gumi E5 at the end of 2Q 2017.

For a plan for OLED TV production expansion, said “The reaction for OLED wall paper TV and Crystal Sound OLED released at CES 2017 in January this year, is better than expected in the TV market.” and mentioned “We expect OLED TV shipments to reach 300,000 units in 1Q and 500,000 units level in each quarter of the second half of this year.”

The forecast for ultra-large TV market in 2017, it is forecasted “LG OLED TV occupies an overwhelming share in ultra-large OLED TVs of 60 inches and above, and the ultra-large TV market is expected to grow continuously and record more than 30% of growth rate in the future.”

For the LG Display’s counterplan forward for the Chinese panel makers’ LCD technology, mentioned “Until 2020, it is concerned that the Chinese LCD panel makers are expected to improve their LCD technology and invest in Gen 10, however, LG Display’s IPS technology, consistent quality of mass production and stable supply chain are enough to overcome.”

LG Display emphasized that the automotive industry can differentiate design through plastic OLED (POLED).

During the Industrial Forum IMID 2016 held on 23 August in Jeju ICC of South Korea, LG Display’s Automotive Sales and Marketing director Sanghyun Ahn gave a key note presentation titled ‘Plastic-OLED Market Projection and Application in Automotive Display’, and explained advantages that POLED brings to automotive interior design. In particular, Ahn emphasized that POLED allows design freedom for automotive cluster and CID (center information display).

Ahn told the audience that cluster and CID related design differentiation and large size actualization is possible in the automotive market and requires unbreakable panel. POLED allows for integration of CID and cluster, a large size CID, and unconstrained cluster design, and can become a differentiation point in the automotive industry.

Compared to LCD, OLED is thinner and superior in contrast ratio, color gamut, and response speed. However, Ahn added that OLED’s lifetime and burn issues remain to be solved. He explained that POLED’s lifetime at 25°C LT80 is expected to increase to 15,000 in 2020 from 10.000 and reliability is estimated to improve from 2016’s 240 hours to 2018’s 500 hours.

Ahn revealed that regarding POLED for cluster and CID use LG Display is planning to release 13 inch FHD curved POLED in 2018, and curved and freeform 25 inch POLED in 2019.
