A Place for OLED Unification

A place for OLED unification was held for Koreaโ€™s OLED industry which used to be divided. The two sides of Korean OLED industry, Samsung Display and LG Display, both attended the 1st OLED KOREA Conference, examining what lies ahead for OLED. This marks the beginning of future OLED display industry where worldwide OLED industry and Korean OLED industry are united.

The division within Korean OLED industry started when LG Display began to produce 55 inch OLED panel when Samsung was the only company that manufactured OLED panel. They each accused the other company of copying their technology and reported to the prosecution and thus the division was born. Last week, they both announced the end of legal disputes. However, although the trial for Samsungโ€™s technology leakage has ended, the prosecution for LGโ€™s technology is continuing. As this is a criminal case, the prosecution has to withdraw charges before it concludes.

In order to end the division within the Korean industry that began from Samsung and LGโ€™s disputes, and to bring together worldwide OLED industry, UBI Research held the OLED KOREA Conference (April 2). 16 OLED experts from Korea, Japan, and China, including from Samsung Display and LG Display, forecast the future of OLED industry and discussed how OLED industry could succeed.

After the conference, approximately 40 industry-academic professionals attended VIP party and commented that the success of the conference was due to Samsungโ€™s presence. Chang Hoon Lee who attended both OLED KOREA Conference and VIP party, and spoke with key speakers mentioned that Samsung will continue to be an axis for OLED industry and lead Korean and international OLED industry. The experts who attended the VIP event expressed hope that future OLED KOREA Conference would aid in the process of Korea, which is OLED device production oriented, becoming the mecca for OLED industry.

What is the Next Killer OLED Display Application?

The interest in automotive display by OLED industryโ€™s key leaders, Samsung Display and LG Display, is growing. During the 1st OLED KOREA Conference (April 2, 2015), Dr. Ki-Yong Lee, vice president of Samsung Display, predicted that โ€œin 2018, 1.4 display units will be applied per car and form a market of 150 million unitsโ€ and emphasized that โ€œflexible OLED panel has an advantage of fast response time and being unbreakable and therefore suitable for automotive displayโ€.

LG Displayโ€™s team leader, Won-Gyun Youn forecast that โ€œfrom the rare keynote speeches from automobile manufacturers in this yearโ€™s CES, automotive display could be a new market for OLEDโ€.

Speaking at the 1st OLED KOREA Conference, Dr. Choong Hoon Yi, the president of UBI Research, also commented that โ€œOLEDโ€™s merit of infinite contrast range will provide high visibility even in monochrome and appropriate for drivers, and flexible OLED can be freely applied to vehicleโ€™s interiorโ€ and estimated OLED will be actively used for automotive display in future.

OLED display, as flexible display, can be easily produced and cannot be broken. It also has advantages of infinite contrast range and fast response time and is a focus of automobile industry. Several cars have already been released with OLED display equipped instruments including dashboard and navigation. Recently, Italdesign Giugiaroโ€™s concept car, Gea, equipped with LG Displayโ€™s plastic OLED was revealed in Geneva International Motor Show 2015.

Following this trend, the company that is most proactive in OLED application in automobile industry is LG Display. LG Display has already announced their target of 30% world market share acquisition in automotive display with the revenue of approx. US$ 1,800 million in 2018. In CES 2015 held in January, LG Display also presented 13.1 inch automotive display and 21.5 inch curved plastic OLED that included instrument panel and CID.

OLED Emitting Material Market, To Grow into US$ 560 Million in 2015

According to โ€˜โ€™OLED Emitting Material Annual Reportโ€™โ€™ published by UBI Research on 13 March, OLED emitting material market of 2015 is forecast to grow into US$ 560 million, a 16% growth compared to 2014. The report analyzed that active operation of LG Displayโ€™s E4 (M2) line, and operation of Samsung Displayโ€™s A3 line, and an increase in operation rate by existing A1 and A2 lines are the main cause for the market growth. Additionally, due to the intense mass production start by the latecomers and expansion of large area OLED panel market, the OLED emitting material market is estimated to grow by 35% compound annual growth rate, and form approx. US$ 2,500 million market in 2020.

In terms of countries, Korea occupies the most of 2015 OLED emitting material market with its market share of 90% or higher. However, from 2017, with Chinaโ€™s bold mass production, China is expected to hold market share of over 20% or higher. Thus, emitting material companies are projected to target Chinese market.

AMOLED panel applied to Samsung Elec.โ€™s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which were revealed in MWC2015, utilized new supply chain and it is estimated these will be used for AMOLED panels of future products. Dow Chem.โ€™s phosphorescent red host materials were chosen for the new supply chain.

Regarding this matter, the head of UBI Research Dr. Choong Hoon Yi will give an in-depth presentation titled โ€˜The Future of OLEDโ€™ discussing OLED emitting material market and OLED industry at the 1st OLED Korea Conference. The 1st OLED Korea Conference will be held in SC Convention in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea on April 2.

Samsung Display, to break through crisis with diversification of OLED customer!

Samsung Display is speeding up to be post-Samsung Electronics. The worldโ€™s sole OLED panel that Samsung Display manufactures is applied to most of the products by Samsung Electronicsโ€™ IM Division. Samsung Display expected to expand the OLED panel market as building the A2 line additionally in 2013 but the Smartphone Galaxy S5 did not measure up to the expectations resulting gradual decrease of factory operation rate a long with the sales.

The diversification of customers is required at this moment in the Samsung Displayโ€™s AMOLED panel industry which heavily relies on Samsung Electronics. And the result of those efforts begins to appear in the tablet PC area. In the last month, Dell revealed the tablet PC Venue 8 7000 using the Samsung Displayโ€™s 8-inch AMOLED panel (refer to the OLEDNET article posted on November 4), and now Fujitu released the tablet PC ARROW Tab F-03G with 10.5-inch AMOLED panel. (http://www.fmworld.net/product/phone/f-03g/info.html#heading02). Fujitsu is emphasizing the excellent picture quality of the tablet PC with AMOLED panel compared to the product made of LCD.

It has been only half a year since the OLED was applied to the tablet PC and yet, it is anticipated to be applied by a wide range of industries from next year given that global set companies begin to use OLED.

Especially, the โ€˜Vision Aidโ€™ function for the red-green color deficient person was noticeable above all technologies. It is a display of a new concept assisting red-green color deficient person to recognize precise colors. We had a chance to talk to the research and development personnel of Samsung Display and hear about the operation mechanism as well as the behind story.

ย

โ–  Tell us about the context of developing the Vision Aid!

โ†’ We literally were researching the technology for the future display. We are not concerned with improving the existing picture quality related issues such resolution, contrast range, etc. but with finding new technologies which will be needed in the future. The conclusion made after a long consideration is โ€˜to make humanistic display for humans.โ€™ As starting from that perspective, numerous projects came into the sight for us to develop the commonly termed โ€˜Bio Displayโ€™. And the Vision Aid is part of the Samsung Displayโ€™s Bio Display.

โ–  Tell us the meaning and significance of this technology!

โ†’ It is said that everything in the 21st century is connected through the internet. It is not too much to say that one sees the world through a display of a smartphone, tablet, PC, etc. And there are over 3% of color deficient person in the general population of Korea. That is, at least 1.5 million people are not able to distinguish colors exactly. We believe this is very important to research the display that enables color deficient people to see precise images and videos in the era of internet.

This is not the first technology concerning the color deficient people. But previous technologies were primarily about increasing the color discrimination by changing the value of color like transforming the red into purple. Then, it becomes more difficult to recognize correct colors as it distorts the original color. The Vision Aid helps one to recognize color without any alteration or distortion of color.

โ–  Tell us more about the technological principles and methods!

โ†’ The cone cells in the retina of the eye play a role of transmitting the detected lights to the optic nerves. There are three types of receptors for red, green and blue. The red-green color deficiency occurs as the functions of the receptors of red and green decrease. The degree of the cone cell function degradation determines the level of color deficiency. When it is impossible to distinguish red or green at all, one becomes red-green color blind.

The Vision Aid is a technology adjusting the red and green colors to appear more intense purposefully. For this purpose, the degree of color deficiency was digitized and classified to be applied as a color compensation technology and enhanced the completeness through the technology verification conducted in consultation with ophthalmologists.

โ–  What was the core element that enabled to realize this technology?

โ†’ The Vision Aid is a technology possible due to the special quality of AMOLED that uses organic light emitting diodes. What you need to do is just control to emit stronger red and green colors. And it is possible to manage the degree of red and green colors depending on the level of color deficiency. However, there is a restriction in realizing it with LCD as it is structurally hard to control the light by pixel.

<‘Vision Aid’ display that was uncovered at IMID 2014>

ย

โ–  How was the collaboration process with ophthalmologists for the development of Vision Aid?

โ†’ Many ophthalmologists of considerable authorities advised on numerous aspect in the course of development. For the customers who choose to use our product, we are currently joint developing the intuitive evaluation methods appropriate for IT devices.

Saying that โ€œUntil now, there only was the test method for color deficient people but no particular treatment, so it would be a great help if it is developedโ€, a professor who has developed the test method for color deficiency gave us a lot of help and proposed diverse ideas. The display technology is equivalent to the field concerning the human vision and thus, the experience withย  ย ophthalmologists was helpful in developing other products.

โ–  Was there any episode in the process of development?

โ†’ What was critical in the course of development was the hands on evaluation by the color deficient people but it was not easy to have testers. As it became known to the company that we are developing the technology for the color deficient people, many employees volunteered as a tester. One of them told us that he had to memorize the entire test sheet to pass the physical examination when it was hard to get a job. As those volunteer testers have experienced many discomforts due to the color deficiency, they were very much interested in the Vision Aid technology and willing to help us developing the product.

โ–  You all must have felt rewarded when developing this technology.

It is very reassuring to have many supporters who understand the importance of the bio display. It was a pleasant experience to realize a possibility for a new development of display as working with the professionals from the diverse fields such as ophthalmologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, etc. The biggest thrill is that this technology actually could be helpful for the people experiencing visual discomforts.

โ€ปย The color deficient person experience filter used in this video is to verify the Vision Aid function and there can be slight differences for each actual color deficient person.

Samsung Displayโ€™s super AMOLED of Galaxy Tap S scored the highest ever

Galaxy Tap S, which applied Samsung Displayโ€™s (SDC) super AMOLED panel, recorded the highest score of Excellent A in the comprehensive evaluation by a professional display group in the U.S., DisplayMate. The Galaxy Tap S surpasses the previous winners of Kindle Fire HDX 8.9โ€, the 1st, and iPad Air, the 2nd, and topped the list with the AMOLED not LCD. This will be a new energizer for the OLED market.

SDCโ€™s super AMOLED panel adopted by the Galaxy Tap S is WQXGA (2560 x 1600) and scored the highest points in color reproduction categories such as color gamut and color accuracy among various evaluating categories of DisplayMate. With such high score, it is rated as a professional monitor with excellent picture quality. Achieving โ€˜Excellent Aโ€™ in outdoor visibility category showed that it is not far behind in brightness and better in viewing angle and contrast compare to the LCD. It was a chance to show the customers that the OLED excels the LCD.

SDC unveiled the super AMOLED panel for the first time at SID 2014. M6, which is a upgraded luminescent material from one used in the Galaxy S5, is applied and shows excellent performance.

<Samsung Displayโ€™s 8โ€ (left) and 10โ€ (right) AMOLED for tablet PCs>

Their detailed specifications were not publicized but assumed to be 8.4โ€ and 10.5โ€ with WQXGA (2560 x 1600) resolution. It is forecasted that M6 will be used in the unveiled AMOLED panel for the tablet PC which is an upgraded luminescent material from one used in Galaxy S5. Phosphorescence red and green of DS-Hi-Metal and Cheil Industries Inc. are applied to the M6 material.

Samsung has been focusing on the tablet PC area as a major business from early this year and expects that the tablet PC will become a device experiencing unprecedentedly rapid growth in IT history as display penetration rate for the tablet PC increases fast.

Samsung already launched 7.7โ€ Galaxy tap, which adopted 7.7โ€ AMOLED panel in 2011.

[SID 2014] Latecomers catching up aggressively

AMOLED latecomers; BOE, AUO and Tianma are rapidly catching up the AMOLED development of Samsung Display (SDC) and LG Display (LGD) at SID 2014.

BOE expressed possibility of investing in TV following mobiles by displaying 55โ€ FHD AMOLED panel. In terms of technology readiness level, it is incompatibly lower than panels of LGD and SDC though, it is considerably fast that it was developed in six months and produced in a pilot line in Hefei.

AUO showed that its AMOLED technology had reached at certain level by unveiling 5.7โ€ WQHD (513ppi) ultra-high resolution AMOLED panel. More attention drew towards AUOโ€™s panel because its production method is RGB+FMM as SDC uses and the high resolution is realized with real RGB strip type rather pentile. AUO also expressed its will on AMOLED business by showing 5โ€ HD flexible AMOLED panel and 1.6โ€ AMOLED panel for a smart watch.

Tianma also unveiled 5.5โ€ HD AMOLED panel. Its performance lags behind the current AMOLED panel, but it aiย ย ย ย ms to supply middle-end and low-end panel targeting mass-production of 5.5โ€ FHD AMOLED through continuous R&D.

Challenges of Chinese and Taiwanese makers become serious in the AMOLED market, where Korean makers, SDC and LGD, are dominant, and the latecomers are about to invest in the sector. Thus, it is expected that the AMOLED industry will constantly grow.
