Fierce Price Competition Amongst WOLED TVs, QD-OLED TVs, and Neo QLED TVs

We experienced fierce price competition in the first half of 2022 among premium TVs with a launch price of $2,000 or more. It will be interesting to see how the Amazon Prime Day event scheduled for July will affect TV prices.
2022 OLED TV prices until June 2022 was analyzed based on 65 inch TVs. The standard was the selling price on Bestbuy.com and Sony’s QD-OLED TV selling price on their official website.
LG Electronics’ WOLED TVs B2, C2, and G2 released in March were $2,300, $2,500, and $3,200, respectively. Samsung Electronics’ QD-OLED TV S95B was $3,000. Sony’s WOLED TV A80K was priced at $3,800 and QD-OLED TV A95K was priced at $4,000.

In June, the price of LG Electronics’ G2 model fell by $200, forming a price difference of $500 for each series. Samsung Electronics’ S95B model continues to maintain a price difference of $200 lower than LG Electronics’ high-end model G2. Sony lowered the price of the WOLED TV A80K by $300, while maintaining the price of QD-OLED TV A95K.
Samsung Electronics’ S95B and LG Electronics’ high-end OLED TV G2 are in heavy price competition. Sony is setting the price of QD-OLED TV higher than WOLED TV.
The price competition is also fierce between OLED TVs from each set makers and Neo QLED TVs with Samsung Electronics’ mini-LED technology.
As of June, the prices of Samsung Electronics’ 4K Neo QLED TVs, QN85B, QN90B, and QN95B, are $1,800, $2,600, and $3,300, respectively. The 8K Neo QLED TVs QN800B and QN900B are $3,300 and $4,800.

The prices of Samsung Electronics’ 4K Neo QLED TV series and LG Electronics’ 4K OLED TV series are similar. Within Samsung Electronics’ entire TV series, QD-OLED TV is located between 4K Neo QLED and 8K Neo QLED. Sony’s OLED TV series, which is highly evaluated in terms of picture quality, is competing in price with Samsung Electronics’ 8K Neo QLED TV series.
Although this price trend is expected to continue this year, aggressive marketing following the Amazon Prime event in the second half of the year and the Qatar World Cup is expected to be strong variables. Attention should be paid to how LG Electronics’ OLED TV with micro lens array technology, which is expected to be released next year, will affect the premium TV market in the future.

OLED Smartphone Launch Products Slows Down In The First Half of 2022

The number of OLED smartphone launches, which had steadily increased from 2019 to 2021 reached only 110 units in the first half of 2022. 137 units had been released in 2019, 166 units in 2020, and 225 units in 2021. If this industry trend continues in 2022, OLED smartphones expected release will only be similar to 2021 or even slightly fewer than it had been last year.
Most of the smartphones released in the first half of 2022 were made in China. 98 products from China accounted for 89% of market share, followed by 9 products from Korea, 2 from Japan, and 1 from India.
By size, 6.6-inch products were the most with 34 types, followed by 6.4-inch products with 31 types and 6.7-inch products with 21 types. The largest sized product was Vivo’s ‘X Fold’, which was an 8.03-inch foldable. Not including the foldables, Vivo’s ‘X Note’ was the largest at 7.0 inches. The smallest product was Sony’s ‘Xperia 10 IV’, which was 6.0 inches.
By design, 102 types of punch hole models were released, with 4 narrow bezel types, 2 notch types, and 2 UPC types. There were two types of smartphones with UPC (Under Panel Camera) applied: ZTE’s Axon 40 Ultra and Nubia Red Magic 7 Pro.

By resolution, 51 products with 300ppi range, 50 products with 400ppi range, and 9 products with 500ppi or higher were released. No products under 300ppi were released. The product with the highest resolution was Sony’s ‘Xpeia 1 IV’, which had a resolution of 643ppi.
There were three foldable phones released in the first half of the year: Vivo’s ‘X Fold’, Honor’s ‘Magic V’, and Huawei’s ‘Mate Xs2’. All three types of foldable phones have a punch-hole design. The resolution of ‘Mate Xs2’ was 424ppi, which is 10ppi higher than the average OLED smartphones released in the first half of the year. Whereas ‘X Fold’ and ‘Magic V’ were two products with the lowest resolution among OLED smartphones released in the first half of the year.

Merck, now it is time to consider the refractive index of common layer materials.

At the ‘OLED settlement seminar for the first half of 2022’ held at COEX on June 23, Merck’s Kim Jun-ho, head of research institute, said, “The concept of the refractive index of the emitting layer is often applied to the capping layer on the cathode, but now it is also required for HTL” and mentioned that the light extraction efficiency can be improved through the optimized refractive index design of HTL.

Next, Kim said, “Because the refractive index of HTL has a trade-off relationship with the hole transport capacity, it is difficult to adjust the refractive index,” and “Even though it was lowered to 1.77 from 1.85, the light extraction efficiency could be improved by 7% without an increase in the driving voltage or a decrease in electron mobility.”

Recently, panel makers are continuously developing the OLED light extraction efficiency. This is because by increasing the light extraction efficiency, as a result, the battery life can be increased. Representative examples include a high-refractive capping layer and micro lens array, and an on-cell film that removes the polarizer and uses a color filter.
The concept of the refractive index of the light emitting, which had been concentrated on the capping layer, is extended to the common layer, and it is expected that panel makers will intensify technological competition, and that there will be many changes in the supply chain of emitting materials of panel makers in the future.

Choong-Hoon Yi, CEO of UBI Research, “Korean display companies must have price competitiveness as well as OLED technology competitiveness”

Although there is still a gap in display technology between Korea and China, it has been argued that Korean display companies should have price competitiveness as soon as possible.

On the 23rd, at the ‘OLED Settlement Seminar for the first half of 2022’ held at COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul, UBI Research CEO Choong-Hoon Yi made a presentation on ‘Forecast of the small OLED market, which China is chasing fiercely’.

CEO Yi announced, “Currently, the media reports that the technological gap between Korea and China has almost narrowed, but making and displaying products and mass-producing products are two different things, and the technological gap between Korea and China is still significant.” He continued, “Samsung Display is planning various products such as slideable and Z-folding based on technological competitiveness. However, it will be difficult to commercialize it immediately because the slideable phone invades the existing foldable phone market.”

CEO Yi said, “It is very important not only to develop technological competitiveness, but also to increase price competitiveness. The reason Korean companies closed the LCD business is not because of the good technology of Chinese companies, but because they were pushed back in price competitiveness.”, and “As the technology advances, the performance difference felt by ordinary consumers becomes insignificant, so products with good price competitiveness are inevitable in the market,” he analyzed.

Finally, “China’s OLED industry is growing under the enormous support from the government. In order not to lose the lead in the OLED market like LCD to China, it is essential for domestic companies to prepare for price competitiveness and the government’s support policy,” he concluded.

GrapheneLab surpasses the ppi limit with a plated metal mask

GrapheneLab, a graphene commercialization technology company, announced that it is possible to manufacture FMMs over 800ppi using graphene.

At the ‘UBI Research First Half 2022 OLED Settlement Seminar’ held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul on the 23rd, GrapheneLab CEO Yong-duk Kwon said, “In the early 2000s, FMM technology, which started in the early 2000s, was not interested in the plating method. It is changing,”, and “After 2013, many patents related to the plating method FMM manufacturing technology have been applied, and it is easier to apply the plating method than the currently used etching method in order to go to high resolution.”

Next, CEO Kwon said, “We moved away from the existing limiting etching method FMM and applied the plating method FMM. Compared to the etching method, where 400ppi was the limit at the same thickness, the plating method realized more than 600ppi.”, “Etched metal mask has a dead zone of 8um in length due to the INVAR structure that becomes sharp like a dot when etching at a depth of 20um, whereas there is no dead zone during pattern plating of the plated metal mask.”

Lastly, CEO Kwon said, “For the MSAP electroforming technology, a low coefficient of thermal expansion with a thin thickness is required. As a result of measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion using TMA on the plated sample, it was measured up to 3.1ppm, and it went down to 2.5ppm without heat treatment.”

Will BOE Resume iPhone 13 Production?

<iPhone13/Apple>

It seems that BOE has started line operations for iPhone 13.
Back in March, most of the iPhone 13 shipments were canceled due to an issue with Apple. BOE will now resume production. With this new development, BOE’s forecast for iPhone 13 production this year is expected to increase after being adjusted down in March.
BOE has a total of 20 iPhone module lines at its B11 (Mianyang) plant. BOE’s production of the iPhone 13 is believed to have begun in early June and production of the iPhone 14 is expected to begin as well. The B11 factory has iPhone 13 line to produce iPhone 12 and 13 and iPhone 14 module line exclusively for iPhone 14, as the process is quite different from iPhone 13 line.
Details of BOE’s iPhone 13 and 14 production volume, panel unit price, and module line by product can be found in UBI Research’s ‘China Trend Report’. UBI Research’s ‘China Trend Report’ can be inquired on the UBI Research website.

1Q of 2022 OLED Emitting Material Market $420 million, up 9% Compared to the Same Quarter of the Previous Year

According to “2Q22 OLED Emitting Material Market Track”, a quarterly report published by UBI Research, the sales of emitting materials in the first quarter were $421 million, down 21.1% (QoQ) from $533 million in the previous quarter but was an increase by 9% (YoY)when compared to $386 million in the first quarter of 2021.
Although sales of emitting materials for TV and mobile devices decreased compared to the previous quarter, IT sales recorded a meaningful figure of $6.6 million. Although sales fluctuate depending on seasonal demand for applied products, if the sales of emitting materials are analyzed by application product, TV use is gradually increasing.

The top 3 companies in 1Q sales were UDC($86.6 million), DuPont($41.3 million), and Duksan($37.5 million). Duksan became the number one company in sales as a Korean company. The overall sales of luminescent materials in the first quarter decreased compared to the previous quarter but only UDC’s sales increased. Sales decreased to $421.5 million in 1Q22 from $533.8 million in 4Q21. However, UDC’s 1Q22 sales increased to $86.6 million from 4Q21’s sales of $85.5 million. It is estimated that this is due to the rise in the price of rare earth metals, a key material for manufacturing dopant.
Estimated sales of emitting materials in 2022 are $1.77 billion and are expected to grow to $2.4 billion in 2026.
By application product, the projected sales of emitting materials for smartphones this year are $1.4 billion, accounting for 79% of the total.

Chinese Panel Makers in Crisis! Will the Display Business’s Deficit Increase This Year?

Honor 70 With Panels Supplied by Visionox

Chinese panel makers such as Visionox and BOE are expected to face losses due to cost pressures.
The operation rate of Visionox was analyzed to be high. This is because Visionox is exclusively producing 70-80% of Honor, a large Chinese smartphone manufacturer.
However, despite the high operation rate, Visionox’s business status is precarious at best. Through cooperative efforts, Visionox was allocated most of Honor’s panel production quantity, but it is known that Honor has requested additional panel price reduction. According to some sources, Visionox is currently facing a loss of about 200 million yuan per month due to the reduced panel price.
BOE, the largest panel maker in China is also facing trouble. BOE along with Visionox had previously been in charge of panel production for Honor but received almost no allocation of production volume from Honor. Earlier this year, BOE faced tremendous difficulty due to the cancellation of existing iPhone 13 shipments to Apple. In April, BOE’s CEO Gao Wenbao felt a sense of crisis due to pressure on OLED and LCD volume and price and gave direct orders on cost reduction. Currently, BOE’s OLED line operation rate is less than 40% and it is estimated that the OLED business unit may incur a loss of about 10 billion yuan this year.
LCD, which is one of the main businesses of Chinese panel makers, is continuously falling in prices and the supply and demand of panels from smartphone set makers are sluggish. If an appropriate countermeasure is not found, Chinese panel makers will continue to experience a growing deficit in the display business.

[2022 OLED KOREA CONFERENCE] LG Display’s OLED 3.0 Captures Brightness and Lifespan Simultaneously

At the keynote session of UBI Research’s ‘2022 OLED Korea Conference’ held from April 6th to 8th, Sang-Hyun Ahn, Managing Director of LG Display, announced, ‘The Present and Future of Automotive OLED Display: LG Display’s Future Outlook’.

Director Ahn announced, “The future will transform people and vehicles, and vehicles and vehicles to be connected, autonomous, shareable, and electrically driven. In order to respond to these changes, vehicle displays are getting bigger and more diverse in design, and displays are being applied to various locations to provide sights and information”.

Director Ahn continued, “The automotive display industry was led by LCD, but the OLED market is also gradually expanding its area.” He predicted, “The automotive OLED market will be worth $1.2 billion in 2025, It is also possible to grow to $6 billion.”

In addition, Director Ahn said, “LG Display has already introduced an OLED 1.0 structure that satisfies the minimum requirements for automotive display: brightness of 800 nits and lifespan of 10,000 hours. Unlike OLED for smartphones, OLED for automobiles requires brightness of 800 nits or more to grasp accurate information even during the day, and lifespan of 10,000 hours or more is essential because the use cycle is more than 10 years. Although there is a trade-off between brightness and lifetime, we plan to develop OLED 3.0 with a brightness of 1,000 nits or more and a lifetime of 10,000 hours or more by overcoming this through development of materials and structures.”

Lastly, Director Ahn mentioned about future displays such as extra-large and transparent, slidable, and rollable that are applied to vehicles and said, “Many companies want large and many screens, but they want to hide those screens inside the vehicle. Slidable panels, which can be a solution to this, are already technologically stable and can become common around 2025. On the other hand, rollable panels, such as those that come down from a vehicle sunroof, still have a long way to go, but we will continue to develop them.”

[2022 OLED KOREA CONFERENCE] Samsung Electronics Joins the OLED TV Market, and the TV Panel Market is Expected to Exceed 20 million Units in 2025

At UBI Researchs 2022 OLED Korea Conferenceheld on April 6th-8th, UBI Research CEO Choong-Hoon Lee gave a presentation on,OLED Market Review.

CEO Lee presented the status of the entire OLED industry, market, and outlook with a focus on issues in 2022.

CEO Lee first announced the OLED TV business, a major issue in the recent OLED industry. CEO Lee said, “The biggest issue that has been heating up the OLED industry since the end of last year is OLED TV. There are topics such as Samsung Display’s re-entry into the large OLED business, sales of QD-OLED TVs between Samsung Electronics and Sony, and visualization of collaboration between Samsung Electronics and LG Display.”

In the TV OLED panel demand and supply forecast, CEO Lee said, “If Samsung Electronics purchases OLED panels from LG Display and conducts OLED TV business, LG Display and Samsung Display can supply a total of 12 million TV OLED panels this year. Among them, demand is 11.7 million units, and oversupply accounts for only 3%.” In addition, “With the joining of Samsung Electronics, the demand for OLED TV panels is expected to expand to 13 million units in 2023 and 20 million units in 2025. According to the expanding market, companies need to expand their facilities by the third quarter of this year” he predicted.

CEO Lee continued, “LG Display has been working hard to secure funds for 8.5 generation OLED line expansion since last year, and it is estimated that it will secure additional funds for 45K expansion within this year. With LG Display’s additional measures, the TV OLED panel market is expected to reach 13.5 million units in 2023 and 16 million units after 2024. However, to secure a market of more than 20 million units, it is necessary to plan to invest in the 10.5 generation by next year” he analyzed. He also said, “If Samsung Display invests, 10.5G investment is desirable, but 8.5G investment is expected.” He said, “Whether LG Display invests or Samsung Display invests, a long-term supply contract with Samsung Electronics for 10.5G investment should take precedence. If the investment proceeds, Samsung Display is expected to secure its own funds, but LG Display is expected to require joint investment with Samsung Electronics.”

[2022 OLED KOREA CONFERENCE] What New Technology Will Advance OLED for Mobile Devices?

At UBI Researchs 2022 OLED Korea Conference Tutorialheld on April 6th-8th, Dr. Jae-Jin Yoo from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University gave a presentation on,An Overview of OLED Materials and Devices.

Dr. Yoo explained the paradigm and market prospect of OLED for mobile devices, the structure of each layer, and the light emitting material. Although LCD is still leading the market by introducing mini-LED and other technologies, it is predicted that OLED will lead the display market in the future.

Dr. Yoo explained that among the latest technologies, “LTPO TFT is a technology newly applied to mobile by supplementing the shortcomings of LTPS TFT and oxide TFT process. LTPO TFT is a double-designed display with low electron mobility but no leakage current by changing at least one transistor to oxide in the LTPS TFT process”. He also explained, “In still images, LTPS TFT needs to be driven at 60Hz to maintain the brightness of the screen due to high leakage current, but for oxide TFTs, 1Hz operation is possible because of low leakage current.” Dr. Yoo added, “Although there is an issue that the process of LTPO TFT is more complicated than that of LTPS TFT, it can reduce the total power of mobile devices by 10~15% and it has the advantage that it can be applied to AOD (Always on Display).”

Next, introducing the OLED deposition method and vapor deposition machine, he explained that if the 8.5 generation vertical deposition method, which is currently an issue for IT, is commercialized, it has many advantages in terms of productivity and is a much anticipated technology.

LG Display Achieves Record Sales in 2021, Swinging a Profit after Three Years

As LG Display posted the highest sales ever, at the same time it also made a sharp pivot into a profit for the first time in three years. On the 26th, LG Display announced that it had achieved annual sales of 29.878 trillion won and operating profit of 2.23 trillion won in 2021. “This is the result of the large-sized OLED panels in the premium market, the strengthening of the small and medium-sized OLED business base, and the innovation of LCD structures centered on IT products,” LG Display goes on the explain. While the overall TV market experienced negative growth last year, LG Display led the large-sized OLED business. OLED TV panel shipments grew by more than 70% compared to the previous year, which turned to profit in the second half of the year. This helped reach a break-even point.

Following the previous year’s earnings announcement, LG Display stated, “This year, we plan to expand profitability in stages based on shipment growth of more than 20% compared to the previous year and strengthened business capabilities,” and “From the second quarter, ‘OLED.EX’ will be applied to all OLED TV panel series to accelerate the trend toward OLED in the premium TV market.” OLED.EX is a TV panel that increases screen brightness (luminance) by 30% and reduces bezel by 30% by applying ‘deuterium technology’ and ‘personalization algorithm’ to organic light emitting devices. These are the core elements of OLED picture quality. In the case of small and medium-sized OLEDs, the mobile sector plans to improve profitability by expanding new models and high-end products in the second half of the year and expand to the overall mobility industry. The LCD division will continue its strategy of selection and concentration focusing on IT products.

LG Display also expressed confidence in Samsung Display, which has emerged as a new competitor in the OLED market. When asked about LG Display’s competitiveness compared to Samsung Display’s QD-OLED, Large-Scale Marketing Manager Lee Tae-Jong remarked, “Our competitor’s products have not been released yet, so an accurate comparison will be possible only after the actual launch.” He continued, ”LG Display, which has been in business for more than 10 years is far superior in our overall competitiveness in our products and cost, economies of scale, and customers. We will continue to widen the gap in the future.”

Many have a huge interest as to which company’s technology will become the main technology in the mid- to large-sized market in the future.

OLED emitting materials market to grow to $ 1.71 billion in 2019

OLED light emitting materials market is gradually increasing as Chinese companies enter OLED panel market led by Samsung Display and LG Display.

The 2019 OLED emitting material report, published by UBI Research, predicts that the emitting material market in 2019 will reach $ 1.17 billion. 2021 and 2023 are expected to grow to $ 1.87 billion and $ 2.0 billion, respectively.

The size of light emitting materials consumed by Korean companies will account for 70.2% in 2019 ($ 0.82 billion), and its share will increase to 75.6% in 2023.

Korea’s emitting material market is growing because the consumption of OLED materials for TVs is soaring. In 2019, 21.1% of light emitting materials for TVs are expected to increase to 49.7% in 2023.

[Press Release] AMOLED sales to reach USD 32.2 billion in 2019, up 13.8% from 2018

UBI Research (CEO, Yi, Choonghoon) published the annual OLED report in 2019.

According to the report, the OLED market is expected to reach $ 32.2 billion in 2019 and 13.8% market growth. The market growth is due to the launch of a variety of applications in 2019. Foldable OLED will accelerate the growth of the flexible OLED market as a convergence product that fuses smartphones and tablet PCs, and 8K OLEDs and rollable OLEDs to be launched from 2H 2019 will further solidly support the premium OLED TV market. In addition, an increase in flexible OLED shipments due to improved yields by Chinese panel makers will support growth in the Chinese OLED market.

AMOLED revenue in the fourth quarter of 2018 was $ 7.9 billion, down 3.7% from $ 8.2 billion in the third quarter and down 10.4% from $ 8.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2017. The quarterly OLED market was highly volatile due to sales fluctuations at Samsung Display.

Revenue in 2018 was $ 28.3 billion, up 7.1% from $ 26.4 billion in 2017. The growth slowed suddenly compared to growth of 58.7% in 2017. The sluggish growth is attributable to the sluggish OLED smartphone market, which drove the OLED market up until now. The OLED market for smartphones, which was worth $ 24.2 billion in 2017, was only $ 24.5 billion in 2018.

Flexible OLED panels are not being adopted in mid-end smartphones due to the high cost of manufacturing flexible OLED panels for smartphones. As a result, the oversupply will continue due to lack of demand compared to the 6G flexible OLED investment. In the fourth quarter of 2018, there was an oversupply of 31%. In the first quarter of 2019, oversupply will increase to 39% by overlapping seasonal demand decline.

UBI research just issued 2018 2Q AMOLED Display Market Tracks

UBI Research recently published “2Q18 AMOLED Display Market Tracks”, which includes market updates of the second quarter of 2018. The report covers OLED display panel makers’ investment status, OLED display market forecasts from 2018 to 2022, OLED demand and supply trends, and competitiveness analysis of OLED Smartphone business for Samsung Display and other OLED display panel makers.

The market update, published with the Excel spreadsheet, describes the production line status and the added line status through future investments of the 15 OLED display panel makers worldwide. Also, it describes not only the major OLED application market such as smart phones and TVs, but also the market forecast by country.

The demand for OLED mobile sets (including smart phones and smart watches) in the first quarter of 2018 dropped to 98 million units from 130 million units in the fourth quarter of last year, due to the lower-than-expected performance of the premium smartphone market, where Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S series and Apple’s iPhone occupy most of the market. OLED mobile set market is to recover gradually until 3Q, when Apple’s new smartphone model is launched, and by the end of 2018, the demand is expected to recover as to the similar level of the same period of last year. In addition, Samsung Display is anticipated to have a positive impact on the recovery of the Smartphone market in the second half of the year by securing competitiveness by lowering the sales price of rigid OLED panel for mobile phone to about US$ 25 to compete with LCD in China.

Consumers' smartphone replacement cycle is getting longer due to the reason that there is no revolutionary change in the new model compared to the past, and the Smartphone penetration in most of the countries except for India, South America and Africa is reaching the limit. Accordingly, the outlook for the downturn is mostly forecasted in the recent smartphone market. There is a growing interest in technology and design to apply a different form factor to revive the market. In this regard, Samsung Electronics' foldable OLED smartphone, which is scheduled to be released later this year or early next year, is expected to create a new momentum. Attention is focused on whether a folding- type flexible display (Dynamic Flexible Display) will be succeeded as a new type of smartphone from the existing edge-type flexible display (Static Flexible Display).

UBI Research predicts that the OLED Smartphone market will grow from 430 million units in 2018 to 900 million units in 2022, and the market for foldable OLED Smartphone is to be from about 1million units in 2019 to 18million units in 2022. This reflects the expansion of OLED panel production lines by panel makers such as LG Display and BOE, besides Samsung Display. It will be updated as new applications are developed in future and the Smartphone market moves forward.

In OLED panel market, OLED panel for Smartphone still occupies 91% of the whole market. Samsung Display has accounted for 90% of total OLED panel market performance and LG Display is followed with about 7.8% share.

OLED TVs, which are continuously increasing in demand worldwide compared to the Smartphone market, are expected to be in short supply this year. LG Display, the only OLED TV panel supplier, will continue to invest in production for the next five years. With the recent approval of new production facility for OLED TV panel in Guangzhou, the full-scale equipment move-in is expected this year. In Paju P10 investment plan, it was confirmed that LG Display will invest in OLED TV panel production line instead of LCD line investment which was examined before. Thus, the OLED TV market is projected to grow to US $ 5.6 billion.

Changes in OLED panel market for smartphones

According to the ‘2018 1Q AMOLED Display Market Track’ published by UBI Research, OLED panel shipments for smartphones are projected to grow at an annual average growth rate of 15.8%, from 450 million units in 2018 to 850 million units by 2022. This is a 9.6% decline from the CAGR 25.4% expected in the fourth quarter of 2017.

<Shipment forecast of OLED panel for smartphones >

The reason shipment forecast of OLED panels for smartphones is declined compared with 4Q,2017 is because smartphone trends have been reflected recently. The smartphone market is sluggish due to the prolonged replacement period of smartphones and the lack of new technology. In addition, the average size of smartphones has enlarged faster than expected, and the size of smartphones is expected to increase gradually with the anticipation for the launch of foldable OLEDs, leading to a slowdown in the shipment growth.

For flexible OLED, ASPs have risen due to the lack of supply, caused by mainly dependent on Samsung Display, and Chinese set makers are burdened by its high prices. As low-priced full-screen LCDs are emerging, it is forecasted that demand for rigid OLEDs will decline since Chinese set makers are adopting more LCDs than OLEDs in rigid smartphones.

Panel makers in Korea and China have aggressively invested in the Gen6 OLED line in 2016 and 2017. Starting this year, however, they are reviewing the investment and operation time frame of mass production lines, with looking into the smartphone demand. As OLED panels for smartphones account for more than 90% of the total OLED panel market, it is an important factor for the investment flow of panel makers.

Meanwhile, ‘2018 1Q AMOLED Display Market Track’ is based on the market performance data and projected system that UBI Research has accumulated over 15 years. It consists of 8 (eight) modules in total: Panel cost analysis, Market forecast, Supply and demand analysis, Market performance (sales), Competitiveness analysis of panel makers, ASP, Supply chain analysis and investment & Mass production line status.

UBI Research, publishes ‘2018 OLED Panel Industry Report’, which analyzes the indicators of OLED industry in 2017

UBI Research published ‘2018 OLED Panel Industry Report’ on February 12, 2018, which analyzes the indicators of OLED industry for the year of 2017.

This report seems very helpful to forecast OLED industry, which is most likely to become the main display in future, since it analyzes panel makers’ development trends, key issues, applied products, and relevant markets from various perspectives on rigid and flexible OLED as well as solution processed OLED.

In the report, the status of OLED products in 2017 is summarized into various applications such as smart phones and TVs, and the trends of newly released products and related issues can be identified.

According to the report, a full-screen smart phone, which has become a trend in recent years, can mainly be applied to flexible OLEDs, while rigid OLEDs using COG (chip on glass) are required to ensure module space at the top and bottom side. Therefore, it is expected that panel makers will implement full-screen as a notch type rather than a current rectangle type to improve the added value, and demand of rigid OLED, which is on the decrease.

Meanwhile, UBI Research predicts that shipment for rigid OLEDs will be 270 million units and that for flexible OLEDs will be 230 million units in 2018, generating sales of US$ 12.5 billion and US$ 23.9 billion, respectively.  Also, analysis shows that the solution process, capable of manufacturing large-area OLED panels with RGB structure without cutting mother glass at Gen 8 or higher generation, will be adopted at the mass-production from 2019. Consequently, 2 million units of solution processed OLED will be shipped in 2019 and 9.2 million units will be shipped in 2022.

Fraunhofer Institute will introduce automotive flexible OLED lighting at ISAL 2017

Specialized in development and manufacturing OLED module, Fraunhofer Institute will introduce Automotive flexible OLED lighting with adjusted color at ISAL 2017 which will be held in Darmstadt, Germany from 25th to 27th September. Fraunhofer Institute had released previously OLED which the color can be adjusted by rigid substrate in 2015.

Fraunhofer Institute has continued to develop flexible OLED lighting since then. Flexible OLED lighting which will be shown at ISAL 2017 is known to be changed to yellow and blue color. It can be shown as white light by making of yellow and blue color at the same time.

Fraunhofer Institute predicts that flexible OLED lighting will be replaced for car interior lights and it could also be used on the ceiling or winding parts where lights cannot be built easily. Commercial lighting is required to have heatsink and unfortunately it can not be easily built with lack of flexibility in design. However flexible OLED lighting is very light and thin which means it is expected to be widely used for Automotives interior with its flexible design. Fraunhofer Institute also made a comment that they may produce flexible OLED substrate glass, metal and plastic film as well.

OLED lighting has been recently used for Automotives interior and it is expected to be used more in the next generation. Customized Automotive service company, Changscustom showed OLED lighting built in the car at Seoul Auto 2016. Furthermore lighting companies including LG Display and Osram supplied OLED tail light with Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Meanwhile, according to 2017 OLED Lighting Annual Report which was recently published by UBi Research, using of Automotive OLED Lighting will be increased to $2.11 billion in 2025 from $6.4 million in 2017 with 107% of growth rate. Especially flexible OLED Lighting is expected to capture a higher market share more than 95% and flexible OLED Lighting will be widely used instead of rigid OLED lighting.

Starting to have mass production process in Gen5 OLED of LG Display from end of September, lighting market is expected to reach full growth. The growth of OLED lighting market is being watched with keen interest to compare with strong growth of OLED display market.

What is the future of OLED?

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research made a keynote speech with a theme “The Future of OLED” at ‘The 3rd OLED Korea Conference’ hosted by UBI Research for two days from March 8 to 9.

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research stated “100-inch rollable wall TV is the future of OLED”. “human eyes have a wide viewing angle so even if display covers the whole wall, there is no discomfort. Glass substrate OLED may be difficult to carry, and accordingly rollable display can be rolled up and delivered like a carpet.” he added.

He also predicted “plastic substrates and printing process for price cut will be suitable for rollable display. TFT and pixel production techniques made by Solution process will be a key to future technology”. If a speaker is built in rollable display, and a correspondence between the person and sound on the screen will represent a perfect display.

Choong Hoon Yi said the reasons for the success of OLED can be found out in the mobile market.
Firstly, 4K contents to be used for future TVs will be used in smartphones, and smartphones will also use 4K resolution.

Second, Apple will release the OLED iPhone this year, and there will be an Apple effect because Samsung Display is building the A3 line for Apple to produce 200 million 5.5-inch OLED displays.

Third, Chinese market accounts for 40% of the global smartphone market, and Chinese set companies have been rapidly increasing the release of smartphones.

Lastly, a flexible OLED to cover the full screen smartphone will have no home button and feature wide screen to satisfy visual functions, and its strengthened security system that reads fingerprint and pattern can be applied.

For the four reasons above, he expected OLED will be key in the future mobile market.

Meanwhile, he expected the shipments of OLED panel will be 1.7 billion in 2021, and the sales will amount to US$ 75 billion. Korean display companies will represent more than 80% of the total market in 2021, and China will take up 10~15%. In addition, he forecast that display panel companies will make a new investment in flexible OLED which will account for 70% of the total OLED market.

2017 will be an important year to be able to emphasize the innovation of OLED to consumers

<Lee Woo-keun, a senior researcher at LG Economic Research Institute>

Lee Woo-keun, a senior researcher at LG Economic Research Institute, predicted that the year 2017 will be an important year to be able to emphasize the innovation of OLED to consumers, in the seminar for the 2016 OLED evaluation held at the Yeouido Small & Medium Business Center in Seoul, hosted by UbI Research on last December 2.

He added “LG is leading the OLED TV market in the premium TV market ahead of next year’s CES, but we will have to keep an eye on the impact of Sony’s joining” as one of the notable issues in large-sized OLED panels, and he continued “as there is still a fundamental expectation for Sony’s image quality among existing consumers, we will have to pay attention to what innovative appearance Sony’ OLED TVs will show and how they can appeal to consumers.

Referring to the adoption of OLED panels in Apple’s iPhone8 (tentative name) in the mobile phone market, as a small and medium issue, he said “it is important how to realize OLED display on Apple iphone 8, and how much impact it will have on consumers through this”. He said “if we could not show the innovation distinguishing it from existing LCDs despite adopting OLEDs, consumers’ expectations for OLEDs may be diminished,” emphasizing that it should draw meaningful responses to OLEDs from consumers’ perspective .

It is expected that Apple will launch iPhone applying flexible AMOLED panels in 2017, and Sony is also being confirmed to continuously review its entry into the OLED TV business. In 2017, it is expected that the number of set-makers launching OLED-applied products will increase more. In the situation that consumers are expecting a ‘completely new thing owned only by OLED products’, which is entirely different from existing LCD products, through various media reports and rumors, the year 2017 seems to be an important year to emphasize the innovation of OLED and to promote its merchantability.

LG Electronics, OLED TV volume of sales 2 times in the 3rd quarter

LG Electronics revealed that OLED TV volume of sales was enlarged two times than last year through the conference on the third quarter performance having been progressed on the 27th, and currently OLED TV occupied over 10% among total TV sales. Also they expect that volume of the fourth quarter will be increased two times vs. the third quarter.

Regarding countermeasures on quantum dot TV of Samsung Electronics, they have no notion of competing prices with OLED TV, and emphasizes that they will strengthen recognition such like best TV is OLED TV by thoroughly sustaining premium strategies. They explains that market position of OLED in the market of over USD 200, or USD 300 has been actually increasing rapidly

HE Business Division achieved operating incomes (381.5 billion won) and sales profits of top levels (9.2%) in the third quarter. Sales amount was 4 trillion and 141.5 billion won, and there was not large change with previous quarter (4 trillion and 157.2 billion won).
LG Electronics forecasts that TV demands will be increased due to entering high-demand season in the fourth quarter, and needs on premium products such as OLED TV and UHD TV will be expanded further vs. previous quarter centering on the advanced market especially. Though profitability is expected to be decreased vs. previous quarter owing to effects from increases of panel price and expanded marketing expenses, they reveals their willingness such like responding to seasonal demands on large-size premium products including OLED TV and UHD TV etc. will be made successfully.

Meanwhile, according to UBi RESEARCH, they forecasts that OLED TV in premium TV market will achieve high-speed growth while forming the market of 69.1% in 2012 from 16.7% in 2016.

WOLED will lead premium TV market after 2020

UBi RESEARCH held ‘An Analytical Seminar on OLED Market Entry Feasibility of QLED and Solution Process’ on the 14th at Seoul Small& Medium Business Center.

CEO Lee Chung-hoon of UBi REARCH said “OLEd TV will show 16.7% market share in 2016 at the world premium TV market, and lead premium TV market with 68.1% share in 2020.” and analyzed such like “LCD TV could not follow OLED TV performance excluding low price and high solution.”

161018_1

China is threating domestic LCD market in current wide TV market while displaying material superiority to LCD industry, and cost-effective rate of the wide TV is losing ground to Chinese products too. Thus, LG Display and LG Electronics did successful market entry after having equipped with competiveness in the premium market through OLED TV, and they are expediting mass-production investment and technical development aiming at dominating and popularizing premium TV market.

The most important factor in popularizing OLED TV is price. ASP (average sales price) of UHD OLED panel based on second quarter of 2016 is USD 720, and FHD OLED panel is approximately USD 450. It was expected that UHD OLED panel could lead TV market if it secured about USD 500.

Development to adopt solution process methods has been progressed in order to lower price of wide OLED panel in the industry, and QLED technology as an alternative of OLED TV is becoming an issue nowadays.

In relation with this, CEO Lee Chung-hoon forecasted like “As much as being closed to commercialization due to development of solution process OLED or QLED technology, WOLED technology becomes to be developed one step more, so market entry of solution process OLED and QLED will not be achieved easily. Specially, there are many technical issues in QLED which is considered as next OLED by Samsung Electronics, and 10 years of research will be required further.”

Also, he emphasized that the technology of being able to reduce cost vs. WOLED such as lessening layer numbers dramatically etc. should be developed in order to enter solution process OLED and market successfully, and the entry shall be made by targeting low-end market. In particular, he analyzed that WOLED would lead premium TV, and solution process QLED and QLED occupy the low-end market after 2020.

강현주 / jjoo@olednet.com

강현주 기자 / jjoo@olednet.com

Dow Chem.

2015 OLED Emitting Materials Market, Dow Chem and LG Chem in Slump…Why?

Hyunjoo Kang / Reporter /jjoo@olednet.com

In the midst of UDC`s domination of 2015 global materials market, with Japanese Idemitsu Kosan`s rapid growth and slump of emitting materials companied, there has been changes to the enviroment.

According to [2016 OLED Emitting Materials Annual Report] to be published by UBI Research in mid-April, the 2015 global emitting materials market recorded approximately a 17% growth compared to 2014

UDC’s revenue decreased from previous year, but remained at the top, the same as 2014. UDC was closely followed by Idemitsu Kosan despite its fourth place in 2014.

Such growth of Idemitsu Kosan is mainly due to its supply expansion in regards to Korean companies such as Samsung Display and LG Display. In 2015, Idemitsu Kosan began actively supplying Samsung Display with blue materials. Together with the increase in Idemitsu Kosan’s client LG Display’s OLED panel for TV mass production line’s operation rate, Idemitsu Kosan’s supply increased.

◆ Samsung Display to Determine Up and Down of Companies

On the other hand, some OLED emitting materials companies that ranked high until 2014 showed poor performance. Dow Chem., that reached the second place in 2014 after UDC in revenue, fell to the fourth place in 2015 due to a big sales decrease. The third and fifth companies in 2014, LG Chem and Duksan Neolux respectively, fell below fifth place in 2015 due to the same reason.

Dow Chem. and Duksan Neolux are analyzed have recorded sales decrease in comparison to 2014 due to the supply chain changes of Samsung Display. In the case of LG Chem, the sales fell as the Samsung Display’s supply volume decreased.

However, Samsung SDI recorded sales increase, and entered within the top 5 in 2015. This company’s performance improved as it supplied Samsung Display with green host.

The company that recorded greatest growth is a Germany company Novaled that Samsung SDI, then Cheil Industries, took over. This company recorded approximately 150% revenue increase compared to previous year, and reached the third place in 2015 following UDC and Idemitsu Kosan. With the increase in OLED panel for TV mass production line’s operation rate, Novaled’s revenue greatly increased.

UBI Research estimated that in 2016, LG Display’s OLED TV mass production line operation rate and Galaxy Note series’ material structure, to be mass produced in the second half, will greatly affect revenue of OLED emitting materials companies.

강현주 기자 / jjoo@olednet.com

Dow Chem. LG Chem.

Foxconn’s Takeover of Sharp, Who is the Biggest Casualty?

Hyunjoo Kang / Reporter / jjoo@olednet.com

Following Foxconn’s takeover of Sharp, which company will end up suffering the most?

On March 30, Taiwan’s Hon Hai’s Foxconn agreed to buy Sharp for about $ 3.5 billion. With this decision, there is much focus on how it will affect the global display market.

Korean companies leading the global display market such as Samsung Display and LG Display as well as key display companies in Japan, China, and Taiwan are keenly interested in this takeover.

Some experts analyze that, out of these companies, the one being most threatened by this takeover will be Japan Display.

◆ Japan Display, May Not be Able to Retain OLED Supply for iPhone

As it became known that iPhone will replace the LCD panel with OLED for future iPhone, it is expected to create a great business within the OLED market. 3 companies, Samsung Display, LG Display, and Japan Display, have been considered as the most likely supplier for iPhone’s OLED panel.

Some media have reported that Samsung Display and Apple have already signed OLED supply agreement, and LG Display and Japan Display are known to be having a heated competition to become the secondary supplier.

However, this Foxconn’s takeover of Sharp could break the big 3. Of these, experts estimate that Japan Display is most likely to be pushed out.

iPhone’s largest LCD panel supplier is LG Display, with over 50%. Following this, Samsung Display and Japan’s Sharp are the second and third LCD panel supplier for iPhone but the order has not been confirmed.

As it became known that Apple will utilize OLED, Japan Display with investment plans for OLED mass production line rose as the possible panel supplier for Apple. Rather than Sharp, Japan Display became a strong candidate for OLED supplier for iPhone along with Samsung Display and LG Display.

However, it all changed when Foxconn bought Sharp. Sharp does not have OLED line for mobile device at the moment, but its small device LCD line is LTPS based that could be transformed to OLED. Foxconn, expected to invest in OLED sector, is likely to turn Sharp’s small device LCD line into OLED line.

Furthermore, Foxconn is Apple’s key production collaborator. Worse, even Foxconn’s newly bought Sharp is one of Apple’s panel suppliers. Excluding Samsung Display and LG Display with verified OLED technology prowess, Apple could choose Foxconn with closer connections rather than Japan Display as an OLED supplier.

One display industry expert explained that Foxconn could push out Japan Display regarding iPhone OLED supplier issue, and even if that does not happen, it will have very narrow standing. He added that although compared to Samsung Display and LG Display, Foxconn and Japan Display are both latecomers in OLED sector, Foxconn is in a more favorable position due to its solid relationship with Apple.

[2015 OLED Evaluation Seminar] Transparent Flexible Display’s Necessity Found in Worth

On December 4, UBI Research hosted 2015 OLED Evaluation Seminar in HJ Convention Center in Seoul, South Korea. The first speaker, LG Display TFD Biz Operation Group’s Chief Research Engineer Jeonghyun Kim spoke on transparent and flexible display’s worth.

Under the title of ‘Transparent/Flexible Display’s Future’, Kim discussed overall development trend of display and marketability. At present, the display market is changing to OLED, but as the growth rate is decreasing Kim added that new market creation is necessary. He explained that this is the time for a breakthrough of new market and transparent flexible display can play the lead. Kim also mentioned the marketability of transparent flexible display that can be actualized through OLED.

Transparent flexible OLED display possesses high technology level required by plastic substrate, low temperature process technology, and module among others. However, while introducing transparent and flexible OLED display’s worth, Kim emphasized the need for related technology development. The transparent display’s worth, mentioned by Kim, includes space expansion potential through home interior design, communication and safety increase within public facilities, AR information on existing transparent area, and sentimental and recreational experience at observatory and gallery. Regarding flexible display’s worth, he cited mobility in thinness and lightness, utilization through digital board, and space expansion through design freedom.

As a prime market for transparent flexible display application, Kim discussed automotive display market; considering the automotive market trend toward driverless/electric vehicles, display utilization inside the vehicle will increase and automotive industry will seek OLED display first.

With the LG Display’s video with diverse applications of transparent flexible display and future direction for display, Kim concluded his presentation.

OLED Rises to Become Purple Ocean of Existing Lighting Industry

OLED is receiving much attention as the next generation lighting as a greener lighting that can replace existing incandescent and fluorescent lights and reduce energy consumption, as well as lighting that can create new market. According to this trend, many organizations are analyzing OLED lighting industry in diverse directions and presenting the analysis.

At the 5th LED Industrial Forum which was held recently together with LED & OLED Expo 2015, Song Hyokyung, a senior researcher of WIPS, gave a presentation on the topic of OLED lighting industry’s patent trend and market status. She explained that as OLED lighting sector is a new market with a great growth potential, the technology development competition is fierce, and presented SWOT analysis results of Korean businesses.

For Korean OLED lighting industry’s strengths, Song gave examples which included world’s highest quality of OLED, AMOLED development and mass production technology, production ability, and diverse convergence technology solution. As for the opportunity factors, Song suggested application expansion through convergence with flexible technology, and increase in demand as the lighting market expands. On the other hand, Song revealed that the deficiency in original key technology on OLED material and components and the lack of mid to long term strategy regarding new technology development could be a weakness for Korean industry. She also gave China’s pursuit, possession of intellectual property rights by leading companies, and appearance of new light sources such as QLED (quantum dot emitting diode) as factors that could pose threat. However, OLED lighting induces warm atmosphere as well as being environmentally friendly and a future convergence industry. With these factors, Song concluded that if these weaknesses and threat factors can be overcome, OLED lighting will be able to show higher CAGR than other lighting markets.

UBI Research analyzed OLED lighting industry via STEEP analysis method in OLED Lighting Annual Report, published in May, 2015. UBI Research analyzed that as income increases, interest in interior design light using specialized lighting, other than necessary lighting, increases. Also, in terms of technology, OLED lighting projects in Korea, the US, and Europe are actively being carried out and estimated that the technology development will gain speed through related technology integration.

Economically, UBI Research analyzed that the market entry barrier is not high as the OLED lighting industry is not monopolistic. In terms of environment, incandescent lighting’s carbon production and fluorescent light’s mercury are becoming big concerns. Based on these factors UBI Research forecast that demand for green lighting, such as OLED lighting, will increase. Policy wise, OLED lighting industry clusters were formed and are supported by Korean and Japanese governments. As OLED lighting related projects are also being vigorously carried out OLED lighting industry is expected to become a high growth industry.

Based on both analyses OLED lighting is anticipated to be an industry with much potential for growth. If speedy technology development occurs and demand for environmentally friendly lighting increases, it is expected that the OLED lighting share of total lighting market will rapidly increase. UBI Research estimated that total OLED lighting market will grow at CAGR of approx. 70% from 2016, and show US$ 10,000 million revenue in 2025.

Apple’s Next iPhone, Can Flexible OLED Be Applied?

Smartphone’s hardware performance has improved as much as possible and can no longer be the differential point within the market. Following this, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 Edge and S6 Edge, and LG’s G-flex series are differentiating themselves from existing products through flexible (plastic) AMOLED panel applied new designs and functions. Particularly, Galaxy S6 Edge’s higher than anticipated demand means that the ratio between total Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge demand was expected to be approximately between 8:2 and 7:3, but at present it is estimated to be 5:5. To meet this demand, Samsung Display began actively operating A3 line, and carried out investment to convert A2 rigid line to flexible line.

As interest in flexible OLED is rising within the next generation smartphone market, there is much talk that Apple will also apply flexible OLED to the next product. UBI Research’s Flexible OLED Annual Report, published on 18 June, analyzed Apple’s flexible OLED application potential and forecast scenario.

According to the Flexible OLED Annual Report, other than Samsung Display, LG Display is the only company with the technology to mass produce flexible AMOLED. Japan Display and AUO also possess flexible AMOLED production technology and with investment, mass production is analyzed to be possible. Therefore, for the Apple to apply flexible OLED to the iPhone series to be released in 2017, the Gen 6 flexible AMOLED line investment of LG Display, Japan Display, or AUO has to be carried out within 2015. However, as Japan Display and AUO’s mass production technology has not been verified, depending on the currently mass producing LG Display’s Gen 6 line investment timing the flexible OLED applied iPhone release date will be decided.

As the results of analyzing future model’s shipment based on the analysis of iPhone series’ sales progress so far, to meet the demand for Apple’s flexible AMOLED applied model’s shipment in 2020, approximately 170K monthly capa. by Gen 6 (considering operation and yield rate) is needed. Considering the recent trend of 20K capa. per 1 line, 8 or 9 flexible AMOLED line are required, and Apple’s future flexible AMOLED line investment is estimated to be actively carried out.

On the other hand, flexible AMOLED market is forecast to grow at 57% CAGR from 2016, and show approximately US$ 35,000 million revenue in 2020.Flexible AMOLED Panel Market Forecast

Large Size OLED Panel Technology Match, ‘WRGB vs. Solution Process RGB’

Large size OLED panel is currently being mass produced by LG Display using WRGB method, and investment in this method for large size panel is being considered by OLED panel latecomers. Another method that can be used to produce OLED is RGB method. In 2013 Samsung Display mass produced using RGB method but halted the process due to problems in yield rate and technology. However, recently as key display companies are developing RGB method using solution process for large area OLED panel, latecomers are having to make a difficult choice in process selection.

OLED specialized panel company JOLED, established by JDI, Sony, Panasonic, and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), is aiming for mid-to-large size OLED panel production using solution process. Additionally, other companies including AUO, BOE, LG Display, and Samsung Display are developing large size OLED panel using solution process technology. In 2013, AUO presented 65 inch FHD panel that used solution process technology, and BOE revealed 30.5 inch FHD panel. Panasonic also presented solution process applied 4K panel.

According to 2015 White OLED Display Annual Report, published by UBI Research, WRGB method has an advantage in high mass production potential as open mask is used. However, due to the stack structure and color filter use, it has a disadvantage of increased panel production cost. On the other hand, the materials and process technology for solution process are not yet mature, but has the advantage of being able to produce large size OLED panel in Gen 8 size or larger without glass cutting using RGB method. It also can reduce the production cost as the material efficiency is high and does not require color filter.

At present the mass produced glass area by the latecomers forecast to manufacture large area AMOLED panel is expected to occupy approximately 30% of the total large area OLED market in 2020, and latecomers’ choice in technology investment will be a key point. Therefore, the large area panel technology leadership will be decided on whether WRGB and solution process methods can solve the issues that each has.

OLED Emitting Material Market, To Grow into US$ 560 Million in 2015

According to ‘’OLED Emitting Material Annual Report’’ published by UBI Research on 13 March, OLED emitting material market of 2015 is forecast to grow into US$ 560 million, a 16% growth compared to 2014. The report analyzed that active operation of LG Display’s E4 (M2) line, and operation of Samsung Display’s A3 line, and an increase in operation rate by existing A1 and A2 lines are the main cause for the market growth. Additionally, due to the intense mass production start by the latecomers and expansion of large area OLED panel market, the OLED emitting material market is estimated to grow by 35% compound annual growth rate, and form approx. US$ 2,500 million market in 2020.

In terms of countries, Korea occupies the most of 2015 OLED emitting material market with its market share of 90% or higher. However, from 2017, with China’s bold mass production, China is expected to hold market share of over 20% or higher. Thus, emitting material companies are projected to target Chinese market.

AMOLED panel applied to Samsung Elec.’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which were revealed in MWC2015, utilized new supply chain and it is estimated these will be used for AMOLED panels of future products. Dow Chem.’s phosphorescent red host materials were chosen for the new supply chain.

<OLED Emitting Material Market Forecast Source: UBI Research><OLED Emitting Material Market Forecast Source: UBI Research>

Regarding this matter, the head of UBI Research Dr. Choong Hoon Yi will give an in-depth presentation titled ‘The Future of OLED’ discussing OLED emitting material market and OLED industry at the 1st OLED Korea Conference. The 1st OLED Korea Conference will be held in SC Convention in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea on April 2.
