OLED Smartphone Launch Products Slows Down In The First Half of 2022

The number of OLED smartphone launches, which had steadily increased from 2019 to 2021 reached only 110 units in the first half of 2022. 137 units had been released in 2019, 166 units in 2020, and 225 units in 2021. If this industry trend continues in 2022, OLED smartphones expected release will only be similar to 2021 or even slightly fewer than it had been last year.
Most of the smartphones released in the first half of 2022 were made in China. 98 products from China accounted for 89% of market share, followed by 9 products from Korea, 2 from Japan, and 1 from India.
By size, 6.6-inch products were the most with 34 types, followed by 6.4-inch products with 31 types and 6.7-inch products with 21 types. The largest sized product was Vivo’s ‘X Fold’, which was an 8.03-inch foldable. Not including the foldables, Vivo’s ‘X Note’ was the largest at 7.0 inches. The smallest product was Sony’s ‘Xperia 10 IV’, which was 6.0 inches.
By design, 102 types of punch hole models were released, with 4 narrow bezel types, 2 notch types, and 2 UPC types. There were two types of smartphones with UPC (Under Panel Camera) applied: ZTE’s Axon 40 Ultra and Nubia Red Magic 7 Pro.

By resolution, 51 products with 300ppi range, 50 products with 400ppi range, and 9 products with 500ppi or higher were released. No products under 300ppi were released. The product with the highest resolution was Sony’s ‘Xpeia 1 IV’, which had a resolution of 643ppi.
There were three foldable phones released in the first half of the year: Vivo’s ‘X Fold’, Honor’s ‘Magic V’, and Huawei’s ‘Mate Xs2’. All three types of foldable phones have a punch-hole design. The resolution of ‘Mate Xs2’ was 424ppi, which is 10ppi higher than the average OLED smartphones released in the first half of the year. Whereas ‘X Fold’ and ‘Magic V’ were two products with the lowest resolution among OLED smartphones released in the first half of the year.

 

Fingerprint full-screen smart phones begin to compete

The competition for front fingerprint recognition of smart phones is expected to become hot.

In the smart phone with the existing home button, the front fingerprint sensor was installed on the home button. Fingerprint security enhances security, but recently, full screen Smartphone without home button has been released and fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of Smartphone. This has caused disadvantages such as an uncomfortable hand shape when touching a finger to the fingerprint sensor and fingerprints on the camera lens.

In order to improve these points and to implement a complete full-screen Smartphone, the development of integrating full-screen fingerprint recognition with display is continuing.

The method of full-screen fingerprint recognition is largely examined by both optical and ultrasonic methods. The optics are inexpensive and easy to mass-produce, but the OLED substrate must be transparent because the sensor is to be located below the OLED panel. Therefore, it is applicable to rigid OLED using glass as a substrate, but it is difficult to apply to flexible OLED using colored PI as a substrate. The ultrasonic method is most stable in accuracy and durability, but it has a disadvantage of high manufacturing cost.

Currently, Chinese set makers have begun to launch smart phones with optical front fingerprint recognition. The Galaxy S10, which will be released next year by Samsung Electronics, is being watched for the adoption of ultrasonic full-screen fingerprint recognition. LG Display is also developing a display with front fingerprint recognition.

As such, the sales for full-screen smart phones with front fingerprint recognition are expected to be started in earnest. Competition in the smartphone market is expected to become more intense in the second half.

What’s the change for full screen implementation?

After Apple launched iPhoneX, applied with notch OLED to implement a wider full screen in 2017, many smartphone makers such as Huawei, Vivo and Oppo started to introduce similar types of smartphones.

 

The total number of notch-type OLED smartphones, which have been revealed since 2017, is 36, accounting for 10% of total OLED smartphones.

The reason why smartphone makers apply notch-type display is to provide consumers with the large screen size in a limited phone size. However, in the notch type, there is a limitation in expanding the display area (DA), which is the ratio of the display to the smart phone, due to the camera and the front speaker. Thus, the smartphone makers seem to implement the camera function with adopting a popup method.

On June 12, Vivo introduced the smartphone NEX with DA 91.2%.The camera is embedded in the device in the form of a pop-up, and the display itself serves as a speaker and fingerprint sensor. By minimizing the bezel, Vivo achieved a full screen.

Oppo showcased Find X in Paris, France on June 19. Oppo also adopts the camera function as a pop-up method, similar to Vivo, to implement a full screen. It has a 3D face recognition sensor. DA of Oppo’s Find X is 93.8%, which is about 2.7% larger than that of Vivo. This is about 10% larger than Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S8 +, which had the biggest DA in 2017, and 11% larger than iPhone X.

Analysis of the average DA from 4Q 2017 to 2Q 2018 after the launch of the Notch model, shows that the notch type DA is about 9% and the camera pop type DA is about 17 % wider than that of the conventional smartphones (excluding notch type). By switching the front camera into a pop-up form, more than 90% DA can be realized.

As such, smartphone makers are making various changes to realize full screen. There is a growing interest in how to minimize the bezel for the launching a smartphone with a wider DA.

2017년 Apple이 더 넓은 full screen을 구현하기 위해 노치형태의 OLED를 적용한 iPhoneX를 출시한 이후, Huawei와 Vivo, Oppo 등 다수의 스마트폰 업체들이 유사한 형태의 스마트폰을 잇따라 출시하기 시작하였다.

2017년부터 지금까지 공개된 노치형태의 OLED 스마트폰은 총 36종으로 전체 OLED 스마트폰의 10%를 차지한 것으로 분석된다.

스마트폰 업체가 노치형태의 디스플레이를 적용한데에는 제한된 스마트폰 크기에서 최대한 큰 화면을 소비자에게 제공하기 위한 것으로 풀이된다.

그러나 노치형태는 카메라와 전면 스피커로 인해 스마트폰에서 디스플레이가 차지하는 비율인 DA(display area)를 확장시키는 데에 한계가 있어, 스마트폰 업체는 카메라를 팝업 형태로 구현하는 방식을 채택하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

지난 12일 Vivo는 DA가 91.2%인 스마트폰 NEX를 공개하였다. Vivo는 카메라는 팝업 형태로 기기에 내장하고, 디스플레이 자체가 스피커와 지문 인식 센서 역할을 하는 것으로써 베젤을 최소화하여 full screen을 구현하였다.

Oppo는 19일(현지시간) 프랑스 파리에서 Find X를 공개했다. Oppo 또한 full screen을 구현하기 위해 Vivo와 마찬가지로 전면 카메라를 팝업형태로 적용하였으며, 3D 얼굴인식센서를 갖췄다. Oppo의 Find X의 DA는 93.8%로 Vivo대비 약 2.7%가 커졌다. 이는 2017년 가장 큰 DA를 가졌던 스마트폰인 Samsung Electronics의 Galaxy S8+ 대비 약 10%, iPhone X 대비 11% 가량 넓어진 것이다.

노치형태가 출시 된 2017년 4분기부터 2018년 2분기까지의 형태별 평균 DA를 분석해보면, 기존 스마트폰(노치형태 제외) 대비 노치형태의 DA는 약 9%, 카메라 팝업형태의 DA는 17% 가량 더 넓어진 것으로 나타났다. 전면 카메라를 팝업 형태로 전환함으로써 90%이상의 DA구현이 가능해진 것이다.

이처럼 스마트폰 업체들은 full screen 구현을 위한 다양한 변화를 시도하고 있다. 어떠한 방식을 통해 베젤을 최소화하고 보다 넓은 DA를 가진 스마트폰을 출시할지 관심이 집중된다.

D.A of the Vivo X20 Plus UD, the Smartphone that had the largest D.A to date, is 85.8%. According to GSMARENA, the NEX S, the high-end model of NEX, is equipped with a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage and 4000mAh battery in a 6.59 inch FHD OLED. The entry-level model NEX A is applied with Snapdragon 710 Processor, 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage on the same OLED display.

현지시간으로 6월 12일, 중국 스마트폰 업체인 Vivo는 전면 대부분이 디스플레이로 구성되어 있는 풀스크린 OLED 스마트폰인 ‘NEX’를 플래그쉽 라인으로 새롭게 출시할 예정이라 밝혔다.

NEX는 지난 2월에 열린 MWC 2018에서 Vivo가 선보였던 ‘APEX’의 양산모델로써, Vivo는 카메라를 스마트폰 상단에 숨기고 지문인식 기능을 디스플레이에 내장시키는 방식으로 스마트폰 전면에서 디스플레이가 차지하는 비율인 D.A(display area)를 91.2%까지 구현했다.

카메라는 application과 연동되어 사진을 촬영 할 경우에만 팝업 형태로 제공되며, 스피커는 OLED 디스플레이에 내장 되어 디스플레이가 음향을 전달한다.

한편, D.A가 90%가 넘는 OLED 스마트폰은 NEX가 최초다. 홈버튼을 없앤 최초의 풀스크린 OLED 스마트폰인 Galaxy S8의 D.A는 83.6%이며, 기존의 최고 D.A를 가지고 있던 스마트폰인 Vivo X20 Plus UD의 D.A는 85.8%다.

한편 GSMARENA에 따르면, NEX의 하이엔드 모델인 NEX S에는 6.59 inch FHD OLED에 스냅드래곤 845 프로세서, 8GB 램, 128/256GB 스토리지, 4000mAh 배터리가 장착됐으며, 보급형 모델인 NEX A에는 동일 디스플레이에 스냅드래곤 710 프로세서, 6GB 램, 128GB 스토리지가 탑재됐다.

The average display size of OLED smartphones launched in the first quarter of 2018 was 6.01 inch. This is 6.7% up from 2016 and 7.7% up from 2017. In addition, the display area (DA) is 81.6%, which is much larger than 71.6% in 2016 and 74.1% in 2017.

Meanwhile, the average ppi of OLED smartphones released in 2018 was 422.9, which was 5.9% higher than in 2016, but similar to the average ppi of 422.2 in 2017. This is because the number of high-resolution OLED smartphones with a QHD level or higher have been released since 2017.

2018년 1분기에 출시 된 OLED 스마트폰을 분석 한 결과, OLED 스마트폰의 디스플레이 평균 크기와 스마트폰 크기 대비 디스플레이 크기를 나타내는 D.A(display area)가 크게 증가한 것으로 나타났다.

2018년 1분기에 OLED 스마트폰은 5개의 주요 업체에서 총 13종이 출시된 것으로 조사되었다. Samsung Electronics가 5종으로 가장 많은 OLED 스마트폰을 출시하였으며, Vivo가 3종, Oppo가 2종, Elephone이 2종, Huawei가 1종의 OLED 스마트폰을 출시하였다.

출시 된 13종의 OLED 스마트폰 중 홈버튼이 제거 된 full screen OLED 스마트폰이 12종 출시 되었으며, 그 중 노치 디자인이 적용 된 스마트폰은 4종이 출시 되었다. 2017년 하반기부터 제한 된 스마트폰 크기에서 디스플레이 크기를 확장 시키기 위해 본격적으로 적용 된 full screen OLED 스마트폰이 2018년 1분기에 다수 출시 되었다.

Full screen OLED 스마트폰이 대거 출시 된 만큼 디스플레이의 평균 사이즈와 D.A도 크게 증가했다.

2018년 1분기 출시 된 OLED 스마트폰의 디스플레이 평균 사이즈는 6.01인치로 나타났다. 이는 2016년 대비 6.7% 증가한 수치이며, 2017년 대비 7.7% 증가한 수치다. 또한, D.A(display area)는 81.6%로 나타나며 2016년 71.6%, 2017년 74.1%보다 크게 증가한 수치를 보였다.

At the 6th China Information Technology Expo (CITE 2018) held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China from April 8 to 11, 2018, a number of panel makers and set makers exhibited notch-designed display panels and smart phones.

 

In CITE 2018, five panel manufacturers exhibited in CITE 2018; BOE, EDO, GVO, Tianma and CSOT. Among them, BOE, Tianma and CSOT exhibited notch-designed display panels.

 

First, BOE introduced 6.2-inch OLED panels applied with notched design. The OLED panel exhibited by BOE has a resolution of 2992 x 1440 with 537 ppi and 400 nit brightness.

 

LCD panels also began to adopt Notch Design. Tianma presented a 6.18-inch LCD panel with a notch design. CSOT also exhibited two 6.25-inch LCD panels and a 6.18-inch LCD panel applied with notched design.

Vivo, a Smartphone maker, also exhibited the X21 with a notch design. The X21, released in March, has a resolution of 1080 x 2280 with 6.28 inch screen.

Since Apple first unveiled its OLED smart phone with the notch design on iPhone X, a number of smart phone makers such as Vivo, Oppo, and Huawei have begun to release OLED smart phones. In this exhibition, many panel makers presented a large number of LCD panels to which Notch Design is applied. Attention is growing whether Notch Design can become a trend in the small and medium sized display market in 2018.

2018년 4월 8일부터 11일까지 중국 광둥성 선전에서 개최 된 제 6회 중국정보기술엑스포(China information technology expo, 이하 CITE 2018)에서 다수의 패널업체와 세트 업체들이 노치 디자인이 적용 된 디스플레이 패널과 이를 이용한 스마트폰을 전시하였다.

CITE 2018에서는 BOE와 Tianma, CSOT, EverDisplay Optronics, GVO 등 총 5개의 업체가 디스플레이 패널을 전시하였으며, 그 중 BOE와 Tianma, CSOT가 노치 디자인이 적용 된 디스플레이 패널을 전시하였다.

먼저, BOE는 노치 디자인이 적용 된 6.2인치 OLED 패널을 선보였다. BOE에서 전시한 OLED 패널의 해상도는 2992 x 1440 이며 537 ppi, 밝기는 400 nit다.

LCD 패널도 노치 디자인 대열에 합류하기 시작했다. Tianma는 노치 디자인이 적용 된 6.18인치 LCD 패널을 선보였으며, CSOT도 노치 디자인이 적용 된 6.25인치 LCD 패널 2개와 6.18인치 LCD 패널 1개를 전시하였다.

In 2018, more full-screen OLED smartphones are expected to be released than in 2017. Three full-screen OLED smartphones were already launched in January 2018, including Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy A8, and at least two full-screen OLED smartphones are to be launched in February.

According to the ‘2017 Flexible OLED Annual Report’ published by UBI Research in December 2017, full-screen flexible OLED is expected to lead the flexible OLED market with an average market share of 79% by 2022. There is a growing interest in the spread of full-screen OLED smartphones, which has become a new trend for smartphones.

2017년 상반기에 Samsung Electronics는 OLED를 적용하고 홈 버튼이 제거 된 full screen 형태의 Galaxy S8와 Galaxy S+를 출시하였다. 이 후 2017년 하반기 들어 Apple과 LG Electronics, 중국 스마트폰 세트 업체들이 줄지어 OLED가 적용 된 full screen 형태의 스마트폰을 출시하는 등, 2017년에 본격적으로 full screen OLED 스마트폰이 출시되기 시작하였다.

2017년 OLED가 적용 된 full screen 스마트폰은 총 15종이며, 분기별로는 1분기에 2종, 3분기에 4종, 4분기에 9종이 출시되었다. 3분기까지 Samsung Electronics와 Apple, LG Electronics가 full screen OLED 스마트폰을 출시했다고 한다면, 4분기에는 Huawei와 Gionee, Vivo 등 중국 스마트폰 업체에서 주로 full screen OLED 스마트폰을 출시하였다.

2018년에는 2017년보다 더욱 더 많은 full screen OLED가 출시 될 것으로 예상된다. 2018년 1월에는 Samsung Electronics의 Galaxy A8을 포함하여 3종의 full screen OLED 스마트폰이 출시 되었으며, 2월에도 최소 2종 이상의 full screen OLED 스마트폰이 출시 될 예정이다.

또한 유비리서치가 2017년 12월에 발간한 ‘2017 Flexible OLED Annual Report’에 따르면, full screen 형태의 flexible OLED는 2022년까지 평균 79%의 시장점유율로 flexible OLED 시장을 주도할 것으로 전망하는 등, 스마트폰의 새로운 트렌드가 된 full screen OLED 스마트폰의 확산세에 관심이 집중되고 있다.

AMOLED용 발광재료 시장 1조원 시대 눈앞

AMOLED를 사용하는 갤럭시S시리즈의 성공에 이어 애플의 iPhone 마저 flexible AMOLED를 기본 디스플레이로 사용하게 되자 중국의 스마트폰 업체들의 AMOLED 수요가 폭증하고 있다.

MWC2017에서 13개 업체가 AMOLED를 채택한 스마트폰을 전시하였다. 세계 최대 스마트폰 시장인 중국에서 시장 점유율을 확장하고 있는 Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE 등이 AMOLED 폰 채택에 적극적이다.

이러한 시장 상황에 힘입어 AMOLED용 발광재료 시장은 올해 1조원에 육박할 예정이다.

유비리서치의 장현준 선임연구원은 발광재료 가격이 매년 5~10%씩 가격이 하락하는 것을 감안하고 발광재료 리사이클율을 5~30%로 가정하여 계산했을 때 2017년 발광재료 시장은 9.6억달러에 도달하며 2021년은 33.6억달러 규모로 확대 될 것으로 전망했다.

장현준 선임연구원에 의하면 2021년 전체 AMOLED 발광재료 시장 33.6억달러 중에서 애플향AMOLED발광재료 시장이 5.6억달러를 차지할 것으로 전망하였고, 한국이 AMOLED 패널 시장을 주도함에 따라 발광재료 시장 역시 한국이 70%를 차지하며 23.8억달러의 시장이 형성될 것으로 예상하였다.

Following the success of Galaxy S Series using AMOLED, Apple’s iPhone has started to use flexible AMOLED as its basic display, resulting in the spike in demand for Chinese smartphone companies’ AMOLED.

At MWC2017, 13 companies showcased AMOLED-based smartphones. The companies whose market share is expanding in China, the world’s biggest smartphone market, such as Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE are active to adopt AMOLED smartphone.

With this market trend, the emitting material market for AMOLED is expected to reach 1 trillion won this year.

Hyun Jun Jang, senior researcher of UBI Research forecast that the emitting material market will reach $960 million in 2017 and increase to $33.6 billion in 2021.

According to Hyun Jun Jang, senior researcher, Apple’s AMOLED emitting material market is expected to account for $560 million among $33.6 billion of total emitting material market, and Korea will capture 70% as it is leading the AMOLED panel market while creating a 23.8 billion-dollar market.

General Class AMOLED Panel Estimated to be Extensively Supplied. How Will it Affect OLED Industry?

Only 2 models of smartphone with the general class AMOLED panel were released in the first 2 quarters of 2015. However, as 5 more models were revealed until August in the third quarter, it is expected that demand for general class AMOLED panel will gradually increase.

 

Currently 7 companies, including Samsung Display, are mass producing or aiming to mass produce small to medium-sized AMOLED panel of rigid type. China’s EDO or Taiwan’s AUO are believed to be producing in small quantity for samples. Other Chinese companies are also aiming to mass produce AMOLED panel but satisfying the current demand is analyzed to be difficult. At present, Samsung Display is the only panel company that can meet the demand for general class AMOLED panel by set companies. There is much interest in whether AMOLED industry can rebound with the Samsung Display’s movement in the second half.

 

It is expected that Samsung Display will increase operation rate of A1 and A2 rigid lines in the second half in order to meet the demand for general class AMOLED panel. Following this, emitting material companies’ sales increase is also anticipated and positively affect management of AMOLED industry’s ecosystem.

 

If the demand for general class AMOLED panel is higher than expected, there are some who believe that additional investment for A3 line could be for hybrid structure that can switch between rigid and flexible rather than flexible exclusive line.

 

There is much focus on how Samsung Display’s mass production and supply plans for general class AMOLED panel will affect the AMOLED industry growth.

보급형 AMOLED panel 공급 본격화 예상, OLED 산업에 미칠 영향은?

2015년 1사분기와 2사분기에 출시된 보급형 AMOLED panel을 적용한 스마트폰은 2종에 불과했지만 3사분기에 들어서며 8월까지 5종이 공개되어 보급형 AMOLED panel에 대한 수요가 점차적으로 증가할 것으로 전망된다.

현재 rigid type의 중소형 AMOLED panel을 양산 또는 양산을 목표로 하고 있는 업체는 Samsung Display등 7개 업체이다. 중국의 EDO나 대만의 AUO는 샘플수준으로 소량 생산을 하고 있는 것으로 알려져 있고 다른 중국 panel 업체들도 올해 AMOLED panel 양산을 목표로 하고 있지만 당장의 수요를 충족시키기에는 어려울 것으로 분석된다. 보급형 AMOLED panel을 요구하는 set 업체들의 수요를 충족시킬 수 있는 panel업체는 현재 Samsung Display가 유일하다. 따라서 하반기 Samsung Display의 움직임에 AMOLED 산업이 다시 한번 탄력을 받을 수 있을지 기대를 모으고 있다.

Samsung Display는 보급형 AMOLED panel의 수요를 맞추기 위해 하반기 A1과 A2 rigid line의 가동률을 끌어 올릴 것으로 예상되며 이에 따라 발광재료 업체들의 재료 매출 증가도 기대되어 AMOLED 산업의 eco-system 유지에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 전망된다.

또한 보급형 AMOLED panel의 수요가 예상보다 높아질 경우 A3 line에 대한 추가 투자가 flexible 전용이 아닌 rigid와 flexible 전환이 가능한 hybrid 형식으로의 투자가 될 수 있다는 전망도 나오고 있다.

하반기 Samsung Display의 보급형 AMOLED panel 양산과 공급 계획에 따라 AMOLED 산업 성장에 탄력을 줄 수 있을지 기대된다.
